DrBill Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 I had a Beech Sundowner and went through 3 Gill batteries in 7 years. That was about right and expected. I've had my Mooney for 3 years and the battery in it at time of purchase (a Concorde) was 5 years old. I flew it for 2 years before having a battery issue so I changed the 7 year old Battery (with another Concorde of course). Upon detailed failure analysis of the removed battery, I found a stripped battery post. The copper post internal threads were stripped making intermittant contact. I repaired the post and now use that 7 year old battery (now 8 years old) on my generator for my home. Works great. There is no better battery to buy. BILL

The disappointing part is that Gil is a member of the TCM family of businesses.... See if you can find a positive review of a Gil battery. I found one recently. bonal Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 Bought a Gill just about a year ago and its already failing. my new Concord 35axc arrived yesterday install tomorrow. specs look way better than on the Gil but if it were up to me i would install a MUCH better car Bat in the back. Oh well at least I know the new Concord is going to out perform the almost new Gill.

Immelman Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 Concorde RG-35 owner here. Bought it 7 years ago and it still acts new. No leaking acid. No maintenance. And at least for my E model, no weight & balance change (it is within a pound of the original equipment Rebat on the original equipment list). The AXC requires a weight change.
Danb Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 Concord...had mine 2 replaced after 8 years due to 'no reason' seemed like the thing to do. the MCS said they were fine, I figured they were long past due, just wonder how long they would have lasted?

N601RX Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 How does Gill even stay in business? Do the have other lines besides their aviation line? I know Concorde has other markets outside of aviation. We use their batteries on our solar powered data collectors. As long as they are not deeply discharged and left that way for an extended time they will last many years. My Concorde was 7 years old when I replaced it because it thought it was getting weak. I still have it 2 year later and use it around the house to power stuff?

FlyDave Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 In my old Cherokee I had put a couple of Gill's in in the 5 years I owned it. I put a Concord sealed lead acid in my J a 3-4 years ago and it seemed fine when I sold it. Previous owner of my Bravo replaced both batteries with Gill Sealed Lead Acid batteries (pn: G243S) in February of 2013. Hopefully they'll last longer than the previous non-sealed versions that were installed (I switch from one battery to the other every time I start - not sure the previous owner did this). Does anyone have experience with the Gill sealed lead acid batteries or just the unsealed product?

Bob -- 6 years for any lead battery is actually pretty good. I'm surprised mine is still going at 9 years and I am a few month short of 10 years. The first Concorde was pulled after 7 years because I thought it was in there too long. The Gills I had before the Concordes lasted 6 years -- and there were two of them!
