We did this - arrived a few hours after the caravans.  We were parked reasonably close to them.  The Mooney caravan lets you buy a BBQ dinner with them even if you didn't arrive via caravan so you can joing them for the evening party.  Even though the show doesn't officially start Sunday, lots of vendor activity and just watching the planes come and go would entertain you all day.  Yeah, totally go.  If you can't find beer, there's always Friar Tucks.

Becca, there is a good chance we will still be around when you arrive. We plan to depart on Thursday or Friday depending on weather. Feel free to come say hi.

Yves, myself and another Mooney driver from Kingston Ontario.  Today we practiced three-ship formation and changeovers.  Apparently some of us are getting better without all the bobbing.  Making much less use of aileron (supposed to be none) and practiced the overhead break.

 

This photo was taken by the instructor in our friend's Mooney (they were number 2) as they are switching from starboard to port of the formation.  Yves is leading and I am number 3.

Didn't realize there were any Mooneys based in Kingston.  We have a family cottage near there, flew to Kingston after Oshkosh in 2011, and did peak around the field and didn't see any funny shaped tails.  We were going to do the same thing in 2012 but had an unexpected overhaul (had to go commercial, yuck) and work won't permit it this year, but maybe (definitely!) next year as we owe my family aerial tours of "our" lake...  Anyway, we should definitely meet up.

His name is Andrew and he is on this forum (his handle = his name). His M20G is hidden on the field of course!

Sounds like a fly in at Kingston next summer then...count me in since I am only 20 min away.  Sorry I missed you last summer Byron but thanks for the invite.

For anyone thinking about coming in Saturday or Sunday--Saturday will be the Caravan arrival which will be followed by plenty of Mooney socializing and post-flight camaraderie.  All are welcome.

 

Sunday is the Caravan BBQ which is open to all and one of the best dining bargains in Oshkosh!  Come on over!

Last night we graduated! Here is a short film. We also did practice formation takeoffs and landings at Ottawa International airport. I believe this is the first time they had this kind of group there...

Ned is on the mark. In my case it was about 5 hours. The advantage of doing it this way instead of having a full day or week-end is that after one flight you have more time to allow things to sink in and realize what your mistakes were. Our instructors do formation acrobatics and have appropriately adapted our training for the Mooney Caravan. They were performing this last week-end at Geneseo NY airshow as "The Pitts"

Good job Caravan folks! Here is a quote I took from the POA forums from a volunteer lineman working the day y'all arrived. Compare and contrast the impression left by the Bonanzas and the Mooneys. ;)

 

I worked flight line ops this afternoon, and handled the three mass arrivals while stationed at the far north end of 36 Right.

The first mass arrival was 109 Bonanzas around 1300. Some observations:

1. I know in your briefing, you are told to keep the speed up once you land, because of traffic trailing behind you. And ATC said the same thing once you land, and tells you to taxi all the way to the end. But seriously, you've got to slow down some time. When you see us linemen, that's a good time to slow down. Obviously, few if any of you are familiar with the "slow down" signals, so please see Figure 4-3-15 in the AIM.

2. I know it's hard to see us lineman when you are taxiing at 40 kts, but please try to pay attention to us. We're trying to prevent you from bumping into other Bonanzas, or killing any of us.

3. Would a wave be so hard? Or was that not in your briefing?

I think 130 Cessnas mass arrived at 1430. Some observations:

1. Thanks for the waves, guys, and welcome to Oshkosh. You all seem generally thrilled to be here, and we love to see the excitement.

2. Well done on your 50 degree gusting crosswind landing.

A gaggle of Mooneys arrived around 1615. Some observations:

1. Well done on your 80 degree gusting crosswind landings!

2. Thanks for slowing down promptly when instructed by the linemen.

3. Thanks for the waves. It's fun to see!

Have fun this week. I'll be returning on Wednesday..

The Mooney Caravan is so much better, safer, tighter, and professional  in the last few years, thanks to the superb efforts of Dave Marten and his team.

 

Dave and I discussed the undisciplined gaggle that usually existed before he became involved several years ago. It was, in my flying experience, somewhat unsafe and embarrassing. Not anymore.

 

Formation flying is not something to be entered into lightly, as those early Mooney Caravans proved. Given the crisp syllabus and flight training now overseen by Dave and his team, the Mooney arrival is something to behold and a sight be proud of.

 

VERY well done, Dave. Sierra Hotel.
