Wow - just looked at the specs - 180-200 knots cruise and pressurized

Why wouldn't someone want one - because I have never heard much talk about these airplanes on the forums ..

It is reputed to be a mechanical nightmare, with an orphaned and very expensive engine.  I'd love to get a ride in one just for grins, but I'm afraid Mooney bit off a bit too much with that plane in the 60s.  Their second attempt at such a vehicle (the 301) eventually morphed into the TBM 700, which is a fantastic plane.

I saw this M22 for sale on barnstormers.

I always thought those things look like the love child of a Bonanza and a Mooney - Bonanza looking nose and obvious Mooney tail.

With all the orphaned airplane and orphaned engine issues - if I must have a low cost pressurized airplane I would go P210.  It would be way cheaper.  I bet even a Barron 58P would be cheaper and more reliable to operate.

Sure would be fun if they could pressurize an acclaim.

Does anyone in aviation have a succesful, long running, geared motor?

-a-

The Pratt&Whitney PT-6 is perhaps the best engine to ever swing a propeller and its geared, but its a turbine.

A distant second is the GTSIO-520-D (-H, -L, -N) used in the Cessna 421 and 404.  If treated with extreme precision it will run through TBO without a cylinder change.  If treated like a 172 engine it lasts 100 hours.

Other than that, I think you are right. Pistons and gearboxes don't work.

The Rotax 912 uses a gearbox (2.43:1 Ratio)... Does that count?  It's one of the most popular engines out there for the LSA market.

My LSA had a Rotex with a gear box, and it was trouble free. Hard to get used to a tach showing 5500 RPM in a airplane. Of course it only was rated at 100 HP. The engine/gearbox was rated at 2000 Hrs TBO.

Rotax uses a rubber drive disk to isolate the gearbox from the engine.  I had a Rotax 512 on my powered parachute and never had a problem with it.  Some of them also put a clutch between the engine and gearbox so it can idle without the prop spinning.

Here is a Pic, I'll try to dig out some video and post it.

Rolls and turbines....hmmmmm

Not in my ball park, yet. 100hp Rotax at one end and 1,000hp at the other. But nothing in the 3-500hp for us?

I had the LS1 GM engine in mind. 400ft-lbs of torque is a challenge to gear down safely. I think the Raven had something to do with that....

Best regards,

Helicopters gear our sort of engines with pretty good success.

The Porsche mooney engine was geared.

Some of the diesels are geared.

There's no compelling reason that it couldn't be done well, with perfectly acceptable reliability.

The Porsche PFM engine only had a 1200 TBO and was not commercially successful, but I never read about gearbox problems.  The Thielert diesels suffered from a gearbox AD that required OH every 300 hours, at 35 grand.  The direct drive diesel in the new Skylane JT-A appears promising, but it is still a 235 HP 12 GPH airplane, and thats really not any more efficient than a gasoline engine.  Since it is flat-rated it probalby is above 10K feet though.   Something about gearboxes and midsize piston engines doesnt work out.

15 years ago someone was trying to get enough commitment from M22 owners to do a TSIO 550 STC. There was not enough $$$ without prior commitment from almost the whole fleet to justify the STC. It was possible like Porsche/Rocket/Missile swap but it never got done. Too bad it would have been a great plane.
