What's the best airport and FBO to use in San Antonio? I'm coming from Tampa. Isn't there an FBO in MS or AL somewhere that everyone likes to stop at for cheap fuel and food too?

I've been into SSF in San Antonio. Very friendly and helpful FBO just South of the tower, but it's been several years.

Flew into KSSF in January.   FBO San Antonio Aviation friendly and helpful, and when a taxi was slow to arrive they drove us downtown to our hotel.    Good instrument approaches and as all the airliners are going into KSAT a few miles away no delays flying into KSSF.

Im a big KSAT fan. We fly there often for Spurs games. Landmark is very attentive, friendly and professional they also know how to move a Mooney without being told.(They know how to move a gear-up Mooney too--but try to avoid that). If cheap gas is the concern, stop at Beeville and tank up then top off at KSAT or buy something from them. KSAT is close to everything, on two main highways and I've never been rushed by heavy traffic nor made to feel like the Mooney is less important than the big metal. You might even see one of the Spurs as they use Landmark to come and go on road trips.

You won't go wrong with either SAT or SSF.  SSF is further from everything, but not that bad and not quite the hassle as the much busier SAT.  Ditto previous comments on Landmark at SAT, just don't expecto to find cheap gas.  SSF's tower was scheduled for closure, but not now.  If you end up at SSF and hungry, there is a nice little Cajun Restraunt in the teminal.

I've flown out of both KSAT and KSSF and either are fine.  Landmark at KSAT can get busy if the Navy is in town taking up ramp space.  Never had to wait very long to taxi and/or take off at KSAT. I now keep my aircraft at KSSF (Stinson) and except for the fact that it is on the south side of San Antonio and I live on the north side, I enjoy being based there.  Decent prices on fuel, a cafe in the main terminal, good fuel facilities, and wonderful people at San Antonio Aviation.  Controllers at both Stinson tower and San Antonio approach/departure are easy to get along with and good at their jobs.  In my 4 years of flying in the area I've only heard one occassion where a controller had to kick someone out of the C airspace.

Some in the San Antonio area use Castroville because of lower fuel prices.

Baytown is a great fuel stop on the east side of Houston. If you stop there, be sure to take advantage of the telephone clearance posted in the FBO office.  I almost always get cleared through the Houston B airspace on what they call the I-10 corridor, which is a neat flight path just on the north side of downtown Houston.

There is good FBO in Meridian, Mississippe that has free hot dogs, soft serve, and drinks.  I don't recall the fuel prices, but entry and exit were easy and quick.  Might even catch some up close military aircraft on the right days.

Don't want to de-rail the thread, but I think there are several Mooney drivers in and around San Antonio so if anyone wants to have an impromtu Mooney Pilot breakfast/lunch/diner one weekend, would be fine with me.  I live in N. Texas, but commute to SAT area and keep my Mooney in PEZ south of SAT and stay here for two weeks at a time.
