Jeev Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 Hi all - I need a fire extinguisher in the cabin of my 78 J; I was thinking of placing it in the middle of the vertical wall under the rear seats near the floor. Any better suggestions? My plan was to mount it with sheet metal screws. Thanks, Jeev Quote

Piloto Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 I have mine installed on the left side of the center console. It is attached to the tubing structure with ty-wraps. Very accesible from the pilot side. José Quote
Magnum Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 On the floor, pilots side. Very acessible and doesn't interfere at all. Quote
skyking Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 mine is in the same place as magnums ( or is it magnus?) Quote
sellis Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 We have a retrofit that installs the fire extinguisher under the rear seat. The p/n is 940079-507. Quote

skyking Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 Ever been in a small plane with a 10 month old that needs a diaper change....... having the fire extinguisher go off would have been a relief! Quote
LuvFlying Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 On my my 205, it's mounted on the vertical wall under the back seat. The mount is about 1/2 recessed. It looks stock to me. Quote
LuvFlying Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Will do Jim. Next time I'll be at the plane will be Friday (at the latest). Quote

PTK Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Does any one have serial number effectivity and cost for the Mooney solution (part 9940079-507) ? Quote
jlunseth Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Serial no. and model no. are on mooney's website, here is a link: http://www.mooney.com/images/MooneyMax/retrofit_kits.pdf Quote
Magnum Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Quote: JimR Thanks, guys. Jose provided his solution to me previously. I liked it very much, but I don't want to do anything that is even remotely going to eat into my leg room in that area. I'm tall and my knees need all of the room that they can get! Perhaps the factory kit is the way to go. I didn't think about looking it up in the parts catalog. Thanks, Magnus. I'll verify that it applies to my serial number and go from there. Jim Quote

PTK Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Mooney wants 800$ for the fire extinguisher kit! Oh! it includes the fire extinguisher!! And they wonderf why they are not selling!! Don Maxwell informed me that I can purchase a Halon fire extinguisher WHICH COMES WITH THE HARDWARE TO INSTALL IT for ~140 $ depending on the size. Mooney is selling a fire extinguisher with hardware for 800$! How much profit do they have to make?! Quote
hansel Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Yowza! Go with the Halon-- i did. They had rave reviews by Aviation Consumer and fit nicely just about anywhere (only 10"x2.5" or so; I located mine on the pilot-side kickboard like Magnum, but with zipties not screws-- worked beautifully. I'm sure the rear seat would work too). They even come in chrome if you're into that. $90-120 at Chief http://www.chiefaircraft.com/airsec/Aircraft/Accessories/FireExtinguisher.html Quote

Piloto Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Quote: JimR I bought one of these from Spruce for $89.00. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pspages/a344t.php It is the smallest and lightest all metal Halon extinguiser available. I figured that the factory kit would be ridiculously expensive, but $800.00 is absolutely absurd. I'll have to go with either Jose or Magnus' solution. Thanks again, guys. Jim Quote
rogerl Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 For the early J's with a bench seat in the back the plywood board that holds the carpet looks to be a good place to mount the cylinder - similar to the location of the factory kit, but without the recess and the incredible price tag. Others have pointed out there are issues, but compromise might be worth it - In my opinion, mounting underneath the panel or on the floor by the pilots legs is a recipe for disaster. If there is an engine or electrical fire, the heat/flames will be coming from that vicinity - making it difficult to retrieve the extinguisher in a most critical moment. Burns sustained from in-flight fires often afflict feet, legs and hands - tending to support my contention that the fire extinguisher should be well away from the area that a fire is most likely to sourced from. FlyingAggie Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 José Was that a special or an everyday price? I found a Banyan Air at FXE by doing a Google search but didn't see fire extinguishers listed on their online store http://www.tropicaero.com. I need to buy a fire extinguisher for my new plane. Anyone have a suggestion of the best place to buy a small Halon fire extinguisher? (Well besides the "usual suspects" i.e. Sporty's, Chief or Aircraft Spruce?) Alan Quote: Piloto That's exactly the one I have on the pictures but I paid $40 at Banyan at FXE. BTW be careful when pushing back the seat, a local Mooney owner broke the pressure dial of the extinguisher on the spar when he pushed back. Set the seat stop forward to avoid this. $800 is definitely too much for the Mooney kit. For that money you can get two oxygen bottles with cannulas. José Quote
