Matthew P Posted December 12 Report Posted December 12 Who are you using to insure your Mooney, currently paying $3600 a year, looking to finish up my Instrument and Commercial add-ons as I'm already a Commercial Rotary wing /Instrument rated pilot..had hoped to complete it before April (policy renewal) but having trouble finding a CFII that meets the insurance requirements to conduct the training....so looking to shop around. EricJ Posted December 12 Report Posted December 12 Assured Partners. They're who AOPA uses now, too. Quote
Pinecone Posted December 12 Report Posted December 12 I go through Parker @Parker_Woodruff at Airspeed. I am insured with Star. 3 Quote
bigmo Posted December 12 Report Posted December 12 I can highly recommend you start with BWI. As far as I know they’re the only broker offering a 6 month policy that’s prorated for 12 months. For Mooney insurance, time in make & model is very key to your rate. At the end of your 6 months, assuming you fly a decent amount, that rate will come WAY down. I just had surgery today - so floating. On meds, but I think it’s called 6-12 program. My broker is Kyle Johnson and his mobile is 979.633.4949. Stellar gentleman. Im a CFI/CFII - where are you located? i did lots of homework and this was by far the cheapest path that leads to a reasonable rate. Kyle didn’t have the exact figure, but it sounds like somewhere in the 60-75 MM was the magic number. I also convinced them MM was M20 and showed him that F or J or C or whatever was variant. There are some great brokers that frequent Mooneyspace, but my personal experience with BWI has been exceptional. Quote

bigmo Posted December 12 Report Posted December 12 I'm in STL, so not super close. Right now, just doing transitions, FR, and IPCs (have a full time job). My work is pretty flexible, so 3 or 4 day weekends are pretty easy to arrange. I need to look athe ACS matrix for rotary to fixed commercial - but that should be pretty quick. The commercial maneuvers are both easy and actually pretty fun/enjoyable. Let me see what the ACS marixes look like and I'll follow up. My wife loves Huntsville, so it wouldn't be a hard sell for her. Quote
Hank Posted December 13 Report Posted December 13 I also use Airspeed Insurance through @Parker_Woodruff, insured with Old Republic I think. Rates are reasonable but have increased the last couple of years. There is usually a break at 100 hours Make & Model, and also with Instruments. Some companies will prorate the rest of your policy when you complete the rating, so always ask. The Mooney Flyer has a state-by-state of CFI / CFIIs, check it out. Huntsville is nice, I'm a little further down in Alabama. While I like my local CFII (retired Navy pilot), she's not a Mooney specialist but is very good as you'd expect from a long-term military pilot. Brownaero@gmail.com for information. 1 Quote

Just over 1000 hours (~900 in my Mooney), Instruments, hangared with two RNAV approaches. Everything matters, the devil is in the details. Get a quote, it never hurts to ask. Quote

bigmo Posted December 13 Report Posted December 13 Initial policy through BWI underwriter was Beacon (I believe that’s the only option offering this 6-12 option). I got the impression some underwriters will write 6 month policies, but it’s rare. Year one was $3100, but it’s prorated into two six month policies with no obligation to renew at the six month period. So I paid $1550 and was done. I’ll be renewing soon and can stick with Beacon (via BWI) or go elsewhere. Right now, I’m looking at quotes of $2500-2700. Those seen good (all things considered). There are SO many variables underwriters consider. Hull value is $100K (I’m a bit underinsured ATM). Plane is hangared at a Class D airfield, two massive runways, full-time hangar, no damage history, and I’m a CFII. In addition to Parker (stellar guy), ive had great luck with Travers. They’re actually located on my dog walk route from my house. Ran into one of their agents randomly at a neighbors wine/dinner party and she told me to please setting by and they’ll take care of me. It’s a family business that knows a/c and the issues GA pilots face. Quote
AndreiC Posted December 13 Report Posted December 13 I am using Aviation Insurance Resources, (301) 682-6200. Victoria Neuville is my agent and I have been happy with what she finds for me. Have been using them for 15 years at least. When I moved to Mooney two years ago (after a long time in Cherokees) that got me insured for $2715 with only 5 hours in make and model, hull value of $85k. But I did already have over 1200 hours, instrument rated, and had over 150 hours in retractable gear (Comanche, long time ago). After one year and crossing the 100 hours in M&M the insurance price dropped to $2041 on hull value of $90k. Quote
PeteMc Posted December 13 Report Posted December 13 Does anyone have a direct line to some of the senior people at AOPA? I know they were talking about insurance rates in general and also for pilots 70+ and they were going to meet with various Insurance Co. to talk about their number crunching for rates not meeting what the data shows. (Why there are accidents, older pilots not causing as many accidents and they're putting in their numbers, etc.) But I haven't heard anything new and calling the 800# didn't provide any new info. I'd be curious what, if anything, is happening with this project. And a totally unsubstantiated comment from someone at one of these meetings was that not just pilots, but all insurance holders across the board are getting hit because of all the insurance payouts the last 10+ years. Lots of floods, fires, storms, etc. have got the Insurance Co. looking at their bottom line. Quote
TaildraggerPilot Posted December 13 Report Posted December 13 2.3 AMU’s for a ‘67 E, $130k hull, hangared, 14k TT (all the ratings and gold seal) Quote
C.J. Posted December 14 Report Posted December 14 Old Republic through Southwest Aviation Ins. Group, $2100 for a $105K valuation '65 M20C, hangared - ATP, CFI-I, 25K TT, 24K TT retractable, >100 TT Mooney. Quote

bigmo Posted December 14 Report Posted December 14 Thanks @TaildraggerPilot and @C.J.. That shows me where the bottom of the market is based upon experience and value. I don’t want to type this too loudly, but my insurance on my Mooney is lower than I expected. Quote

That seems high? This coming year I'm paying $1730 with 100k hull on an M20C with Global Aerospace. I'm a 51 year old 1430hr SEL private pilot with IR, with 90% of my time in that particular plane. Global ends up being the cheapest for most years when I get quotes, though occasionally I've used another company - e.g. Old Republic in the coming year. There's some brokers out there who focus on our segment of the insurance market and do a good job. @Parker_Woodruff sometimes hangs out here and is definitely one of them - he's been helpful to me the last few years in limiting impact of the recent rapid rise in costs. sdmideas Posted Monday at 07:49 PM Report Posted Monday at 07:49 PM I use avemco, service has been as good as I could hope for. I’m <100hrs on my m20c, hull value of 75k $1770/year. I also have a Cessna 150 insured with them for a whopping $890/year. Seems like a decent enough deal so far. I had a quote done by BWI earlier this year when I was looking to add the m20c and it was nearly double. Quote
sdmideas Posted Monday at 07:50 PM Report Posted Monday at 07:50 PM I suppose a few REALLY good datapoints would be…who has actually had to USE their insurance? How was the experience? What happened afterwards? 1 Quote
