Lyc. angle valve cylinders availability

Are new ones still backordered for months?  Are the Continental ones available?  Who would be likely to have an exchange on the shelf?

Call Air Power and ask them. They will know about new ones. Most engine shops can overhaul your cylinders in a few days, no need to find cylinders on the shelf. If you have yours overhauled, you will know their history. If you get exchanged cylinders, it’s a crap shoot.

There is only one source for new angle valve cylinders, and that is Lycoming. Last I heard they said call back in a couple of years, but not for a very long time.

That’s interesting. I did not know they were yet building angle valve cylinders. Now the other side is you can get them, but how good are they? Because the Continental  cylinders they bolt on factory engines,  wear out the valve guides and the bores at midtime.

@N201MKTurbo has them on his and he hasn’t complained yet, but he seems like a pretty easy going guy.  They have been available from continental for a few years.

They are the ECI cylinders. Continental bought ECI a few years ago. They have no connection to the cylinders on Continental engines.

How has your experience been with the Continental cylinders?  How much time do you have on them?  Do they have the nickle carbide bore treatment? Are the parts interchangeable with Lyc.? (valve guides, valves, pistons, rings, etc.). Sorry for all the questions.

They are not “Continental” cylinders. They are Lycoming cylinders made by  a third party manufacturer of cylinders for both Continental and Lycoming engines.  That company was Engine Components International (ECI) before they were acquired by Continental Aerospace Technologies back in 2015.

Due to Lycomings many challenges ramping up their cylinder production, “Continental“ may be your only choice for new cylinders.

They are identical to Lycoming cylinders and all parts are interchangeable. I have about 120 hours on them. They have been trouble free except one exhaust valve started leaking. I lapped it in place and it fixed the problem and has been fine since. The compressions are all almost perfect. (76-80/80) one of them is leaking a little oil where the drain back fitting is screwed in. I might fix that today.

Mine are just steel cylinders, not with the NiCr plating or spraying or whatever they do.
