I saw on eBay serial # 1 Mooney Eagle was for sale. Unfortunately it landed in a field and the main gear collapsed. (The picture is sad)  It looks like a lot of damage to me. Could it possibly be cost effective to fix that kind of damage? I would think it would cost more than a flying one. I own serial # 2 so I guess I'm the oldest "flying" Eagle.

Sometimes an off-field landing can be not too bad.  My M20M did a gear-up in a snowy field back back in 2000 after it lost engine power.  Repairs took a few months but certainly didn't exceed 50% of the total AC cost, and it flies beautifully ever since.  Mind you, there's probably a difference between a pillowy snowy field and a rough grassy one...

Later in the same issue, Coy Jacob indicates that off airport landings, on land, cause enough damage to exceed 70% of the aircraft's total value.
