Hey there! I have a 61 M20B and I am researching installing a Brittain B601 autopilot in it. It would be the same servos as the PC system. Yes, I’m aware of the pros and cons of installing this system today.

I need to do some exploring to see if my airplane already has the mounting brackets for the servos in the wings and tail already but I’m not sure what they look like. If anyone has any pictures they could share it would be really helpful.

thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard BJ!

Some things to look for…

The Brittain system became standard in 1965…

Many planes added the system going back in years of construction…

Looking forwards….

We watched Garmin try to install their new GFC in as many Mooneys as possible…

It took a few efforts to include earlier M20Cs in their world domination campaign….

Essentially, adding brackets where needed takes a bit of extra effort compared to them being in place already…

The M20B also has a couple of differences as well compared to the most modern M20C…

possible changes to the ailerons…

short rudder…

short rudder throw…

Other than that mountain to climb… the M20B is technically a different airframe from the M20C…

It would be really helpful to find an M20B that already has a legal installation of the Brittain system….  Be ready to copy all the paperwork if needed.

Be on the look out for how it got installed… Mooney drawings, or STC….?

If Mooney drawings exist… the factory is still open…

How familiar are you and your mechanic at this kind of challenge?

Pp thoughts only,

Thanks Carusoam. Great food for thought. I’m not at all familiar with the process. Need to discuss with my mechanic. As you know the B models are hard to come by these days.

Upon further thought and research I think I may head down the AeroCruze 100 road. Looks like they just got an STC for the B model. That may be my cheapest, most reliable, legal option at this point.

thanks for the help!

Another difference- with the addition of the Brittain PC system, the trailing edge of the control surfaces was changed to reduce control forces.  This was accomplished by the addition of a sharp chamfer at the trailing edge.  The PC system won't have enough command authority without these.

@EricJ just gave an update on possibly seeing an Aerocruze in the near future…

Not sure on BK’s plan for various Mooney Models… they are going to need one for the M20B…

Best regards,

The AeroCruze 100 is approved for the M20B! Duncan Aviation saying 120 days until they actually have the units in hand though. Just spoke to them yesterday.
