Airframe corrosion, disuse, lack of ongoing maintenance and upkeep, high time engine, prop approaching AD required inspection, out-of-date avionics, leaking fuel tanks, landing gear donuts overdue for replacement, damage, missing logs, gaps in log book entries, condition of paint, interior and glass, etc.

^^^^   Add to this list: sagging engine mounts, magneto hours since overhaul, carburetor years since overhaul, damage history, metal in oil filter, condition of air induction system, does the prop hub have the 100 h ECI inspection requirement, condition of PC system if so equipped...

If you are looking at a Ranger then you need to look at belt buckles.  It should be big enough to make a statement but not so big it over powers your boots.

Match it with a good western shirt and a bolo tie.  Many folks look to accent with silver and turquoise.  Remember less is more.

I enjoy flying my Ranger, and drive a Ranger for eight years' of Mooney Ranger ownership.

But I gave up my pointy-toed boots and fist-sized belt buckle more than a decade before I bought either Ranger.

But I do still enjoy a good hat!

@Hank is a Ranger owner.  The good thing is you can spot them a mile off and go the other direction!

Have a prebuy done by someone knowledgeable about the M20C and can make sure all ADs are complied with.  BKlott has a pretty good list above.  Landing gear donuts are important because if they are neglected they won't provide a proper cushion and instead will transmit landing stresses to the fuel tanks, causing leaks.

I can add the following:

Nosewheel gear:  does it have a lot of play left-to-right (shimmy on landing)?  If so, you'll need a bushing kit from Lasar to fix it.

Fuel tank selector and gascolator.  Often overlooked but must work properly and have no leaks.

Prop governor:  When last overhauled?  It's expensive.

Instrument and overhead lights and rheostat:  Also easy to overlook; do they all work properly?
