Luci Posted July 19, 2022 Report Posted July 19, 2022 Any advice with a bent (slightly arched) lower left member of the engine mount of a 67F? The arch is approximately 1/8” toward the firewall, and the resulting tilting of the engine is negligible (1/64”). My concern is the downward effort not being translated along the length of the member, and instead creating a bowing momentum of the member. Any thoughts? p.s. wrote to Mooney, no answer… Quote
Jsno Posted July 19, 2022 Report Posted July 19, 2022 Do you know what caused it to bend? Prop strike, corrosion?? Quote
Luci Posted July 19, 2022 Author Report Posted July 19, 2022 Don’t know what caused the bend. Back in 1970, the airplane was stopped in a chicken wire fence, and the book says it was properly repaired. No other damages listed in the logbooks. All AD’s complied with. I see both AD’s on the engine mount are complied with. It is obvious it is an old issue. The airplane is new to me, and I just saw it after I mounted the newly OH engine… Quote
carusoam Posted July 20, 2022 Report Posted July 20, 2022 Yikes! There are aviation welding shops that OH engine mounts… Often, when OHing the engine… people opt to send the mount out for inspection and paint… Any time the prop does the stopping instead of the brakes…. An inspection of the engine mount usually follows…. PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- Quote
carusoam Posted July 20, 2022 Report Posted July 20, 2022 Writing and calling Mooney directly should yield a response…. There are good people still working there. Lets see if @M20Doc is around today… (bent engine mount tube) Best regards, -a- Quote
Guest Posted July 20, 2022 Report Posted July 20, 2022 Sadly, to correct this the engine has to be removed and the mount repair/overhauled or an other one located and installed. Clarence Quote

Wildhorsetrail Posted July 20, 2022 Report Posted July 20, 2022 If there are no dents or other deformities, I wouldn't personally be very concerned. Quote
cliffy Posted July 21, 2022 Report Posted July 21, 2022 Engine mount strength is in straight sides to welded triangles transferring the loads correctly. Engineering 101 1 Quote
MikeOH Posted July 21, 2022 Report Posted July 21, 2022 What would cause that bend? Hard landing on the nose? Quote
Luci Posted July 21, 2022 Author Report Posted July 21, 2022 I don’t know what caused the bent. However, it’s in the shop now. I didn’t felt comfortable with it. Thank you for all the good advice! 4 Quote

That particular frame member is mainly in compression and any bending of it greatly reduces its strength. The lower two (L and R) members together hold a large portion of the weight of the engine and prop. 2 Quote
67 m20F chump Posted July 23, 2022 Report Posted July 23, 2022 I sent mine to Lasar. They turned it quickly for a reasonable price. I got it good, quick and cheap. I thought that was impossible! Quote
BKlott Posted July 23, 2022 Report Posted July 23, 2022 (edited) I sent my mount to AWI for inspection and refinishing. Looked beautiful when it came back. You mentioned repairs to the mount that were done in the 1970s. Was that the last time the mount was properly inspected? A lot can happen over a (roughly) fifty year time period. Luci Posted July 27, 2022 Author Report Posted July 27, 2022 I assume the last inspection was about 10 years ago. Now will get a new inspection and refurbishment. I only hope will look like yours. Quote

I'm trying to roughly estimate what it will cost to overhaul vs replace the engine mount on my 67F. Thanks. Quote
Nico1 Posted August 30, 2022 Report Posted August 30, 2022 Overhauled mine with AWI in 2020 ($840) with a minor repair (I think that included shipping but not sure). 1 Quote
carusoam Posted August 31, 2022 Report Posted August 31, 2022 OH is a normal step in engine mount ownership… with the economics similar to engines… most people OH their engines instead of buying a new one from the factory… Then again… there are people that prefer the new from the factory for things… Best regards, -a- Quote
67 m20F chump Posted September 1, 2022 Report Posted September 1, 2022 It was $800 ish off the top of my head. Came back looking like new. 1 Quote
67 m20F chump Posted September 4, 2022 Report Posted September 4, 2022 I had them powder coat mine in black. Now that I see the photo of the one in white I think that is a better option. It Would be easier to see a crack years down the road. Quote
