I've been trying to learn more about engine monitor data, lean tests, mag checks, etc. trying to get a feel for my engine and establish a baseline.  Wondering if there is a thread or a resource that has normal vs abnormal and what the problem was... i.e. example of faulty mag vs faulty plug, example of failing exhaust valve and what clues in to problems ahead, good GAMI lean vs poor, etc.  I tried a search but found several threads that were old and pics were scrubbed.  I'm also curious to see what different ranges in EGTs and CHTs are between cylinders are normal.  Anyone have some good learning examples or know of a good primer for this?

The best thing you can do is take the Advanced Pilot Seminar web course... I think it is still available. Worth every penny, and the most efficient way to acquire the knowledge you seek.

All offer some interesting viewpoints…

When to use what and how…

Fist time with an engine monitor… see how much data you can get out of a run-up…

Data acquisition is much slower than you can imagine… don’t be in a rush…

From the run-up… you will see all plugs individually… differences in mag timing, as well as both mags working….

Learn how to download the data, share it, and post it…

PP thoughts only…

For the baseline numbers, I recommend following this guide: https://resources.savvyaviation.com/resources/other-documents/flight-test-profile/ and uploading the data to free Savvy Analysis and sharing the link so others can help out: https://www.savvyaviation.com/savvyanalysis/. Of course, you could sign up with Savvy for the Analysis and have their experienced folks take a look - highly recommended.

I fully agree with you. If you upload all your flights savvy provides you with a score card for your engine comparing it with similar make and model. If then you still have further questions you can always request a specific diagnosis for your engine. Key is to download the data from your JPI and upload each flight to their side.

I had some issues with high CHTs and thanks to their help I was able at least to manage it better now.

For your reference I am attaching my latest trend analysis.

Like @Oscar Avalle I too subscribe to the Savvy's service and really value it.  When I ask Savvy a question regarding something curious in the data coming off my JPI EDM 900, I always get a thoughtful answer, and topics to discuss with my local A&P and some times an issue that I can troubleshoot myself.

Head on over to Savvy Aviation, and on the way, pickup a copy of Mike Busch's book Manifesto.  He has a lot of great information on piston engine reliability and monitoring.

There are a number of great videos Mike has done for EAA and others outlining many of the principles of modern engine management.

Long story short, the absolute values of the egt mean vary little.  Depending on how far down the exhaust tube the probes are installed will affect their temperature readings, what matters is the relationship between the cylinders.  Mike goes into depth about leaning with multiport engine monitors and where peak cylinder pressure occurs, etc.

If you have a monitor with download capabilities, absolutely sign up for the free SavvyAnalysis to review your data after every flight.  Your mechanic and wallet will thank you.
