Question: I’ve recently swapped my cracked engine mount for another that has the gussets as described in the Mooney SB M20-192a (https://www.mooney.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/SBM20-192A.pdf) in my ‘62 C model. My problem now is how to mount the control arm for my cowl flaps on the new mount? 

The cowl flap control arm previously mounts to the vertical arms just above the lower firewall mount points. Now, there is a gusset on one side as per the SB. Is there a new cowl flap control arm part or modification proscribed for the cowl flaps after the SB?

I don’t recall my M20C’s proximity to the nicely bolstered corner…

Do you have a maintenance manual that might give an indication to where the control arm is supposed to be located?

See if @M20Doc is around… (M20C cowl flap control arm location and newly OH’d engine mount….)

@AIREMATT you are one of many who have this problem.  I inherited the issue and found out on my first flights that the cowl flaps were semi-stuck in the full open position.  I'm still contemplating ways to improve the alignment so it will move freely and correctly.  With the gusset in place, the attachment clamp is too far up the support bar and therefore misaligned the cowl flap bar with the left side.  I would like to hear if anyone else has found a fix, other than the expense of pulling the engine and re-welding the gusset.  It also gets a little complicated because it causes an misalignment with the actuator cable.  The joy is figuring out how the offset the mount on the cowl flap control rod.

Something to consider…

Some Mooneys went to a fixed cowl flap setting after 1965 some time…

See if the fixed cowl flap setting meets your M20E’s requirements…

See what later M20Es and Fs have done…

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

Looks like they used fixed cowl flaps beginning in 1969 until the latter part of 1975 based on the bottom gusset specified in the service bulletin.

Cowl flaps were added to my 1975 C that falls into the 1969-1975 range of serial numbers. The notched bracket was used.

We just got one back for an F model and it doesn’t have slot/notch for the cowl flaps clamp either….at this point I think people are going to have to specify in advance that they want the slot. Our mount was sent out with the cowl flap assembly attached to it and it STILL came back with no way to reinstall the clamps!
