Received email today about the STC for tailbeaconX. Can any expert out there explain to me why this one needs a control head while the original tailbeacon does not need one?

quick look at the site, the tailbeaconX  unlike the TailBeacon,  is a full blown transponder  with 1090Adsb and diversity.

Man, if i didn't already have adsb, i'd prob think about this

TailbeaconX is a remote mounted transponder, therefore needs a control head.

In an older Mooney this is an interesting option because you can install an AV30 that can act as a transponder, backup AI, backup CDI and also a display for traffic information.  Combines a lot of functionality into one 3 and 1/8 round hole.  We older Mooney's don't have a lot of excess panel real estate so definitely considering it.  I do wish it had ADSB in though.

Has anyone installed the Certified version?  Are you happy with the solution.

I see that the M20K is not on the list of approved models for STC. Is this correct?

I believe it has to do with the lighting setup. If you have the enclosed wingtips, the tailbeacon X will not work.

I started looking at it to upgrade an older panel.    It looks like for $5K in UAvionix Gear and $5K for a Garmin 175  you can have a complete panel upgrade.

For ADSB In they are relying on their remote portable boxes.   For Ipads.

They also have the interface for the S-Tech Auto pilots.

The install would be really easy.   Just need an 8 conductor run back to the tail and done.

And you would be able to remove the vacuum system if the plane does not have the Brittain system.

I have the tailbeaconx and av-30. Its great.

You might run into problems with the later models with the full rudder and the tail light mounted on the rudder.

Also, to enter the squawk code is a bit of a b**ch. If you mainly fly class G then its great, lots of controlled and it can be frustrating. They are working on trying to improve that. Talks of even a number pad possibly.

The Av-c is lovely and has lots of information and easy to read.

Adsb out is also nice to have. Safety, and the convenience of controllers already having a positive ID on you before you ask for clearance.
