Jinxx500 Posted February 6, 2022 Report Posted February 6, 2022 I have a '65 M20E that I was trying to start yesterday. When I primed the engine and pulled the mixture back to start it came all the way out into my hand. I'm looking for a replacement but I'm not sure where I should start. I want to make sure I order the correct one. Any help/recs would be greatly appreciated! Quote
Ragsf15e Posted February 6, 2022 Report Posted February 6, 2022 You should call around to the MSCs and see if someone has one in stock. Start with lasar, maxwell, maybe dugosh. They may have to order from Mooney, so try to find one in stock. The other way to get one is to get together all the measurements and send them to the people who make the cables for Mooney. Can’t think of the name right now…. You will get the same exact cable for cheaper as an owner produced part (you supplied the dimensions). They may even have one on the shelf. Ahh, mcfarlane, thats the company. So those are your two routes… MSC or mcfarlane. 1 Quote

Prop looks like it was replaced. How’s the throttle feeling? Mine got pretty stiff and started a small “rebound” from full forward when I replaced it and the new one feels so much better. 2 Quote

Take the old one off and mail it to them and they will duplicate it for you. https://www.mcfarlaneaviation.com/section/services/custom-engine-controls/ Actually McFarlane now stocks all three cables mixture and prop cables PMA'd (previously they only had the mixture I think). I recently bought the mixture and prop and had my throttle done a few years back. Agree that original throttle cable must get replaced. 2 Quote
Jinxx500 Posted February 6, 2022 Author Report Posted February 6, 2022 Thank you very much!!! Yeah now that you've mentioned it the throttle does slide loosely a little bit, I did notice that. No binding that I can detect. It prob is smart to go ahead and replace it as well. Quote

I've noticed that my throttle does slide a little aft on its own at cruise. Great advice, I think I'm going to replace it as well. Quote

Probably have a switch on the throttle for the gear warning horn too. Quote

Looking to get an engine monitor as well while I'm at it. Quote
carusoam Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 Engine controls over 2khrs… Are looking for replacement… in case anyone hasn’t heard this before… Similar to having mags serviced at 500 hours… it is a real surprise to have one of your engine controls come off in your hand… Macfarlane and user supplied parts are awesome! Great report Jinx! PP thoughts only… -a- Quote

I replaced the throttle, prop, and mixture all at the same time, 4 or 5 years ago. I think the mixture was around .2 amu. I looked on the McFarlane website and it looks the mixture cable for my C model is $211. The mixture cable for fuel injected E and F models appears to be about 3x that, however. Please do your own research to verify that cost. For that kind of money, you might consider sourcing a used mixture cable from one of the usual suspects (Paul Loewen, Alan Fox, etc.). Quote
TheAv8r Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 +1 echoing everyone else on replacing engine controls. I replaced my throttle cable with the McFarlane Vernier Assist one (mostly works on my E, I have a stiff throttle arm on my engine so you have to apply pressure to get it to vernier correctly). The total bill was $1370 for me, including around $680 for the cable, shipping, and then 7hrs labor to install. 5-7 hours per cable is the going rate, might shave a bit off if you do 2 at a time since they don't have to put the cowling off/on. ArtVandelay Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 I did all 3 when I had overhauled the engine, I did the removing and install myself (AP did the connecting to engine which he found challenging ?). The tricky part of the throttle cable was having the notch cut for the gear warning and getting it properly adjusted, my prop and mixture weren’t connected correctly either. They should be adjusted so there’s about 1/4” left at full forward, and should not go all the way to the stop. Quote
