WAFI Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 So, I have a weird thing going on. When I turn my strobes on, I intermittently get static on my Comms, regardless of squelch settings. Has anyone experienced this? Jumping ahead, I’m going to replace all my strobes for LED ones. Recommendations? Also, I think the current strobes have a power supply somewhere that’s apart of my current system. I’m not completely sure though. Can someone lead me in the right direction as to where i can find the power supply box or boxes? Do I need to remove the PS for the new LED strobes? Quote
A64Pilot Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 I believe sometimes it’s a ground loop, and or any shielded wire as I believe the high voltage of a strobe emits RF? Whelen is among the best, but you pay for quality. AeroLeds is or was any way seemed to be a good buy but it’s been a few years for me. Don’t toss your old strobes, many will want the parts Quote
Eight8Victor Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 I replaced my strobes, nav and landing lights with L.E.D. James @OSUAV8TER is a Whelen dealer and will walk you through what you’ll require. The power supplies are in your wings and will come out. You can use the existing wires for the new equipment. Phil Bracken (863) 651-5557 installed mine in my hangar. He might do the same if you reach out to him. I am very pleased with mine and should have done it sooner. Quote

Where are you located? Quote

If the lights are grounded to the airframe and not the battery or electrical bus, it can cause noise attenuation through the airframe. If you want to install LED lights the Whelen Aerospace Technologies (WAT) Orion 650E for the wing and the Orion 500 for the tail are direct replacements. When you do any kind of LED light install you need to remove the strobe power supply because it will blow out the LED strobe lights. Remove the power supply, tie the wiring together to ensure strobe power continuity, and wire the LED lamp to existing wiring. You should not have to run new wire unless your ground wire is not done correctly. I mean, it can be done that way but it should be grounded as previously recommended. WAFI Posted January 22, 2022 Author Report Posted January 22, 2022 One more thing… How about the wing tip taxi lights. Is there an LED replacement? Part number? Quote
