I fly a 1980 M20K. Purchased in March 2019. New to me and my Mooney AI for annual this year. The message is my POH had its last revision in 1984. The only way to correct this is $400 fee to Mooney and they send a drive that you print and replace the pages. Any other way to comply that my fellow fliers know?

Look in the Download section here.

But there is no requirement for Part 91 to update the POH beyond the one issued when it was built. It should have your serial number at the front, right?

If your IA is insistent on this for your annual inspection, you need to find a different IA for next year, or possibly this year if your annual isn't due yet.

Go to https://www.mooney.com. Go to the Technical Publication and Documents page. Open the Mooney Technical Publications document and you will find the most current revision of various documents.

This^^ any current ADs (which would include any mandatory changes to the POH... IF they exist) can be found on the FAA website, and any needed text printed from there.

The POH and AFM are a little confusing. Regulations require a Airplane Flight Manual. This will be specific to your N number and include weight and balance information, equipment list, and FAA-approved Limitations. A full description of the requirement can be found in CAR 3. In the 1970s, the General Aviation Manufacturer's Association (GAMA) recognized that there was no standard format and developed the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) specification which satisfies the regulation and contains additional information as well. So the document that should be present in your airplane should be a AFM/POH with the parts of the POH that are required by regulation constituting the AFM. It's not a bad idea to make a copy since if the AFM is ever lost, only the manufacturer can recreate it from its records and they usually charge a fair amount to do the research.

Not only does it require a big check from Mooney to legally replace your required afm but then you need an ia to go through it and update it for any stc’s that require manual updates. Most all avionics require it so it can be a long task

As others said you can just print a generic poh for use at home but that isn’t what the faa requires in the plane.
