anAscendancy Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 I just ran across a picture of a strange looking mooney. Upon further examination it came out to be a aerostar mooney 201. What are these aircraft and where did they come from? 1
mooneym20d Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 I have one. The short bodies were 200's in '71 and became 220's with the long body F. Mine is an E.
KSMooniac Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Did it have the funny "stinger" tail? I don't believe there were any factory J (201) models with that tail, although somebody could retrofit one to a J if they had nothing better to do I suppose.
gregwatts Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Aerostar owned the company for one year....I believe.....1971. I owned N6817V which was an Aerostar 220......a 71 F model.

carusoam Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 MooneyM20d, You have the most unique Mooney! Front of a J, Paint of an Ovation, and stinger tail replete with Butler button hook that nobody else has. Where does the name Mooneym20d fit in? Best regards, -a-
mooneym20d Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 I had a '63 M20D many years ago. Also, so many Mooney owners out there, "D" was all that was available. Jim
scottfromiowa Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Jim: I had looked through your photos previously. Nice E. Your "D" name through me to at first. Not a big fan of the Hook tail, but I AM of your split folding rear seats...Wish I had those.
DaV8or Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Quote: mooneym20d Look at my pics. The tail is elongagted in the back as well.
mooneym20d Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 I wasn't a fan of the hook tail either and actually considered having it removed. When it came down to it, I decided to keep the plane as is. It has grown on me. The plane gets stares everywhere I go. I like the rarity. I wish I could claim it makes the plane faster, but I can't.

mooneym20d Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 Okay then. It will stay, forever.

scottfromiowa Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 I yield to the voices Jim. I agree. It is unique in a cool way. With the paint you have on your E it looks fantastic. Maybe it IS faster.... Well done. Scott
scottfromiowa Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 I like your interior a lot. Well done too! Do you have front shoulder harnesses? If no, maybe santa will bring you a pair? They are reasonable and truly can be a life saver.
mooneym20d Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 Thanks for the comps. The shoulder harnesses are next on the list. Pretty easy installation, it appaears.
jetdriven Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 All except the clamp around the tube on the pilot side. That took as much time as the whole rest of the job. It physically cannot fit. You just have to keep bending it and retrying it. Maybe file some on the edge of the clamp. The job is worth it though.

jetdriven Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 Yeah almost forgot, dropped that special spacer a couple of times behind the sidewall. Lose that thing and you are finished.

anAscendancy Posted December 17, 2011 Author Report Posted December 17, 2011 Very interesting that aerostar could own the mooney corp for one year and do such a unique change to an already unique vertical stabilizer.
