1965 M20C, trying to provide my mechanic info on how to setup the voltage regulator.  He's not a mooney guy.

I showed him the electrical diagrams from the service manual but was hoping to find more info here on how to set it all up.  Did a few searches, but didnt find anything.

Is there a guide or tutorial on how to do this?

You don’t need to be a Mooney guy., and the Mooney service manual will only tell you what wires you won’t be needing anymore.

There should be a schematic that came with your regulator. It’s not plug and play and will require rewiring some things and some new larger gauge wire. If I remember correctly there is a wire from the master switch circuit that you can cut and reuse and that’s about it.

do what the drawing says and you will be fine.

Simple question…

Did you get a new Zeftronics voltage regulator to go with the new alternator?

The old generator based voltage regulator is now a desk ornament…

Wiring diagrams for the alternator and Zeftronics VR… are pretty simple to follow…

You may want to include some pics of what you have…

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

Best regards,

If it’s a Plane Power alternator kit, then go to the planepower.aero website and click on support, then troubleshooting, then download the troubleshooting guide for an externally regulated alternator- there is a wiring schematic in the guide that lays out how the whole thing is supposed to be wired….which is, strangely, missing from the STC install instructions.

What alternator did you get?

Are you having wiring issues or voltage regulator setting issues?

The kit should have basic wiring diagrams and introductions.

PlanePower, mostly wiring questions.

I just did this conversion on my E model. Feel free to ask me any questions directly if you need assistance. I ran all new wiring for the entire system.

Just make sure your using the correct PN for both alternator and regulator for your model aircraft.  There is a type A , a type B and  Type C .

When installing a JPI900 , I had a fluctuating amp reading ( not visable on the original guage). After days and days of troubleshooting and cleaning every electrical connection twice, brush check and cleaning, resistance checks, switchs checks and several phone calls. it was found that years ago  the wrong TYPE of VR was installed, It did the Job OK, unnoticable until JPI. Check your part numbers !!!
