Planegary Posted May 9, 2020 Report Posted May 9, 2020 Ok I need the collective Mooneyspace knowledge here.I have a problem of the whiskey compass not working properly on my E model. The windshield is the one piece windshield and somehow the bar that the compass is attached to has become magnitized causing my compass to become unusable Does anybody have an idea how to degausse the bar? My mechanic is scratching his head trying to figure out how to do this. Any help would be appreciated Quote

Any help would be appreciated Need a compact degausser with adjustable arms that you can shape to fit in there without scratching the canopy.Did this with my IA last year, took about an hour and really makes a difference. After we got done, the compass was in cal on all headings, and has been ever since. 1 Quote
BrianWilkins Posted May 9, 2020 Report Posted May 9, 2020 I just went through the pain of installing a new vertical compass so I feel your pain. I have an E with a one piece windshield also. I tried using a magnet to determine whether that center post was steel and, at least on mine, it isn't (magnet wouldn't stick). So, I ended up getting two sheets of the magnetic shielding material from Spruce and putting them on the underside of my dash. Then I also used the magnetic correcting balance balls on the compass itself. And FINALLY, I was able to get the compass to read properly. Prior to all of these gymnastics, it was reading between. 30 and 90 degrees off. Pretty crazy. Quote
carusoam Posted May 9, 2020 Report Posted May 9, 2020 Brian, What year was your Mooney built? the center post has changed over time.... in dimension and material of construction... Using a magnet near the compass is not a really good idea... My 65C would run into challenges... the chrome-moly tube would block the magnetic field... and the compass would hang in place, then break free and run to catch up... My O has a SS tube... fewer magnetic issues with stainless... like a stainless fridge... Degaussing works really well... finding somebody that has experience is a great idea... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a- Quote
Planegary Posted May 9, 2020 Author Report Posted May 9, 2020 Thanks for the input. I will probably have my mechanic try method 2 to-degauss the bar. I checked the compass and it is fine outside of the plane but when brought to install it swings and is unusable 1 Quote
Janat83 Posted May 9, 2020 Report Posted May 9, 2020 I had the same issue in my airplane and I was able to correct it with PBB475 compensator ("balanced balls"), now it's very accurate up to +/-2° in all directions. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk Quote

Nukemzzz Posted May 11, 2020 Report Posted May 11, 2020 66' E My Whiskey Compass seems to point north randomly. I've been trying to get my local Avionics guy to look at it for 3 months but he never has time. I'm not sure yet if I have a magnetized bar or if the screws in it just needs adjustment. Quote
