201er Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Does anyone know where I could get a replacement latch for the window? It's just the white piece of plastic that spins around and keeps the window from opening. I have no idea what it's called so I'm having trouble finding the part to buy. Here's a picture in which you can see my window in case it helps: Quote
OR75 Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 I believe it is called the Latch/Storm Window P/N: 917013-000 probably avaialable at a MSC or try to google the number Quote
N601RX Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Aircraft spruce sells a kit with the hinges and latch. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/beechstormwindow.php Quote
201er Posted July 8, 2011 Author Report Posted July 8, 2011 The only source I've found so far wants $25 for a little piece of plastic! Quote
LFOD Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Damn, in aviation terms, you are getting off easy. I would jump on that deal. Quote
Piloto Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 You can cut on of these from a plexiglass sheet yourself. It does not take that long. José Quote
Hank Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 The joys of owner maintenance! If you have the old one, trace around it [or hold the pieces together and trace around them] on a scrap of plexiglas, cut it out, file it smooth. Drill the hole before you cut it out, it will be much easier to hold on to. Quote

201er Posted July 8, 2011 Author Report Posted July 8, 2011 Ok thanks everyone. I just found a source for $3.75. Still a rip off for a tiny piece of plastic no doubt, but after hearing $25 it sounds like a bargain. I'm going to hold onto the one I glued together now that I realize these things are golden. Quote
fantom Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Care to share your source with the rest of us, 201er? 1 Quote
OR75 Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 In the future, we may be pushed into bulk purchasing. Could be good to have a "parts of interest" section in tis space. Quote
201er Posted July 8, 2011 Author Report Posted July 8, 2011 I found a listing on controller.com for this part number from: Willmar Air Service - Parts I'll let you guys know how it works out when I get/install it. Last thing I need to find out was that they got the part number wrong and just sent me the washer for the screw that holds the latch on for $3.75 and that the latch really is $25!!! Quote
DXB Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 I found this old thread after my latch spontaneously snapped in half with a pop and flew across the cabin, at the exact moment I rotated yesterday. This caused a considerable startle on my part and a wtf-type exclamation. Had I lost control, it would have also made the stupidest NTSB report ever. Consider this post your informal AD to check your 50 cent plastic latch for cracks, maybe replace or overhaul every 50 years. The lap around the pattern to come back was breezy, but uneventful. I ordered this $6 latch from skygeek: http://m.skygeek.com/piper-472-024-latch-dwg-65742-storm-windo.html?utm_source=transactional&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Transactional%2BEmails%2BItems If it fits, I am willing to face the wrath of the FAA by putting a Piper latch on a Mooney. You're living dangerously. funny, but it seems that with almost any airflow over the fuselage the area outside my storm window is low pressure. It takes considerable effort to open it in flight even at relatively low indicated airspeeds. Quote

Yeah makes little sense- I figure it was some kinda flex in the plexiglass on rotation that put pressure on the little door to open. Quote
MyNameIsNobody Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 I have a latch if you are in a lurch... Quote
gsxrpilot Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 Some hanger fairies cut a little latch out of some scrap Lexan for my C. Quote

The storm window actually came open? The latch on mine only holds it closed when the plane is not in motion. In the air differential pressure keeps it shut TIGHT. I've opened the storm window in flight a number of times, flipped it closed and not latched it. Only noticed the lack of latch when it opened after landing. Quote

But my window requires some pressure to shut after replacing the foam seal on it recently. I think this added pressure and the vibration of the takeoff roll made the deteriorating latch snap. Quote
StinkBug Posted February 24, 2016 Report Posted February 24, 2016 That makes sense. Next time you're flying try it though. Open the window then flip it shut. Mine snaps shut like a mousetrap, and you can't get it open if you don't have fingernails. Quote

It may be smart to keep an extra in the hanger for when your breaks! Mike, where did you source your part for $3.75? Kind of like exhaust springs in my old F. I kept an extra in the aircraft at all times as they broke often enough. If I had one, the airplane could be repaired very quickly. -Seth Quote
Jim Peace Posted May 13, 2018 Report Posted May 13, 2018 Okay I need one. it flew off into the cabin the other day and nowhere to be found........ any new ideas being that this thread is kind of old? Quote
Yetti Posted May 13, 2018 Report Posted May 13, 2018 Home depot. Window section. Lexan. Cut out. Drill hole gently. Sand with sand paper on flat surface. Use finer and finer sand paper. 1 Quote
