Anyone have thoughts on this scenario?

Gear handle up and nothing happens.  Push override and nothing happens, not even the normal horn and annunciations.  After about three or four minutes it retracts.  Extension is always normal.  ‘79 M20K

Yup, sounds like your up switch going out. It's the one in the gear well. Best way to ensure it is fixed right is to have your A&P put it on jacks, troubleshoot and then fix.

Check the small bar across the top of the emergency gear retraction handle. Backseat passengers kick this sometimes and if that bar is not secured where it is supposed to be the gear will not retract.

That would not explain why it retracted after 3-4 minutes.

I had the same exact thing happen in my old M20J. I got underneath the plane in the hangar and used the wooden handle of a hammer to exercise the limit switch about 25 times. It's hard to push! Problem never came back.

Get a can of contact cleaner.  normally found in the auto section of wally world or auto parts house.  Could also be a relay going bad, but probably the limit switch.   Since you are dirty and enjoy rolling around on the ground.  Might as well pull the back panel and do the flap limit switches too. spray and exercise the switches. repeat several times.

It can also be the gear contractors (the big relays by the gear motor).

With the plane on jacks, being careful to stay out of the way of the gear, tap the contractors and limit switches with the back of a screwdriver. It will often make the offending item work. This will indicate what needs fixing.

Thanks for the input. Reading the wiring diagram does seem to point to the up limit. Will search that post.

Exercised the up limit switch and started working.

Thanks again for the input.
