bob865 Posted August 29, 2018 Report Posted August 29, 2018 I'm looking at finally putting a GPS in my plane. There was recently a discussion about what was required for making a GPS installation legal for IFR and one item, as I remember it, was an indicator and annuciators showing the source in the pilot's view. My understanding was the GI-106 had all th annunicators on it so it covered this requirement. Anyway, my real question is, can I use a G5 as the indicator for the GPS for a legal IFR installation? I know it's capable of displaying the info, but would this still be required to have a traditional indicator? I was planning to upgrade my DG to a G5 as well when it dies, but if it can act as a legal indicator for IFR GPS use, then I would prefer to buy that over the traditional indicator. Thoughts? Quote

You can see in the bottom left of the HSI the blue arrow which also has GPS below it. That will change based on the NAV input..ie. VOR, LOC, GPS. 1 Quote

AFAIK, the big requirement for annunciation of various modes is that they have to be within the primary field of view, so the main problem will be keeping the GPS display in that area. Does the G5 annunciate approach modes, like LNAV vs LPV? Quote

jamesm Posted August 29, 2018 Report Posted August 29, 2018 For me the GI106 didn't make sense.... one more instrument hole /space taken by a mechanical instrument that has potential to be failure prone. I am driving 2-G5 ADI/HSI with a GNC255 and KX155 KI208 LOC/VOR indicator only. It is in the G5 installation manual. The G5 has for ILS capabilities. I serious doubt the G5 wouldn't be selling if couldn't be used as a standalone instrument. Just my thoughts James '67C Quote
bob865 Posted August 30, 2018 Author Report Posted August 30, 2018 That's perfect! I bought a G5 when my ADI died back in January and absolutely love it. It's time to finally add a GPS and was weighing the option of a $2000 GI106 or a $2500 G5 HSI and it felt like a no brainer which is why I did the G5 attitude in the first place. Quote
