I'm the guy who always has charger problems and hopes the iPad can make it till I land, when I need it most. Anxious to try my new, one pound battery today!

make sure your battery has a 2.1 A output, the standard 1.0 A output is not enough to power and charge an iPad.

Wouldn't the 1.0 A at least extend the useful life of the iPad before it went dead?  I know it's not the optimal solution, but it would be better than nothing.  Does anyone know how many more hours of life someone could expect with one of those?

Had my buddy make me a couple of these.  On 1amp it just slows the discharge of the ipad.  on 2.1amp it basically keeps it at whatever the ipad was at.  Fully charged ipad plus one of these I get at least 6 hours on ipad air with bluetooth on and wireless off.  full screen brightness and foreflight.20170902_130643.thumb.jpg.5eaf6afe05fc10238577bbdccd47ddbd.jpg

I believe the lithium ion runaway problems are when it's being charged, not normal use.

I thought it was also thermal runaway independent of charging status and shorted discharge but I could be wrong.

Ok, you made me look, Boeing problems came from internal defects, discharge due to shorts internal defects, overcharging also causes problems, especially if they don't monitor the battery temperature.
I had a battery explode in my BMW 325, turned out to be overcharging, I never knew because they had no gauges or warnings for high voltage. This is a problem because the battery is next to the fuel tank on the 325.

Flew five hours...battery charged iPad the whole time..and wife's phone, then my phone.  Battery still has 3/4 bars.  It's called a RAVPower 26800mAh...3 USB charge ports, 5.5 amps output.  No more cigar lighter chords.  Yippee.
