Flying Crab Posted May 7, 2017 Report Posted May 7, 2017 Hey guys, going all out after three years ownership. G500, Keeping G530W, adding G430W, Jpi 930, G5. Total gut job. My installer wants no steam gauges. Not sure if I'm sold on non steam backup. Anyone been through this before with comments would be appreciated. Quote

My installer wants no steam gauges. Not sure if I'm sold on non steam backup. Anyone been through this before with comments would be appreciated. I might be able to shed some light on this for you. In late 2102, I had an Aspen 2000 installed. At that time I kept the steam gauges, specifically the airspeed indicator and altimeter. The attitude indicator was mandatory. I'm currently converting the plane over to all glass, eliminating the steam gauges completely. The hard part for me on glass was the mental conversion to digital airspeed. I was okay with the altimeter being digital. After making the mental transition to digital, I feel comfortable to go all glass. What is the shop recommending? I am installing a L-3 ESI-500. carusoam Posted May 7, 2017 Report Posted May 7, 2017 (edited) Welcome out in the open, Flying Crab. My installer wants me to convert all of my BK instruments to Garmin... My Chevy dealer wants me to trade in all my fords too... There are a few people around here that have gone all glass over the years. Planning is an important step. Not all devices are equal. Getting a proper back-up AI seems to be a small paperwork challenge. A perfectly good primary AI may not be able to work as a back-up IA in some cases. It is all in the certification documents... Fortunately your installer/sales guy should be able to define the path forwards with an explanation of what works for you and why. Make sure the G5 is eligible for the role of back-up... it might be limited by it's paperwork still. I believe this is the device that Marauder is detailing above... http://www.l3aviationproducts.com/products/esi-500/ Don't forget... before and after picturers are always appreciated... Best regards, -a- Edited May 7, 2017 by carusoam Quote
Godfather Posted May 7, 2017 Report Posted May 7, 2017 (edited) Some shops are allowing the G5 to be used as a backup AI. However, if you want to get rid of all the steam guages you will need a different unit. The airspeed and altitude are not certified as primary. Edit: You might also want to think about a 750 to go with the g500 Edited May 7, 2017 by Godfather Quote
M20F Posted May 7, 2017 Report Posted May 7, 2017 Personally my view is vacuum gauges are cheap and a nice back up if the electrical system takes a dump. Nobody has ever really made a compelling argument to me why taking all the vacuum out does something for you. 1 Quote
Flying Crab Posted May 7, 2017 Author Report Posted May 7, 2017 Thanks guys. All input appreciated. I will be updating as things progress along with pics. Thanks again 1 Quote
Rmag Posted May 7, 2017 Report Posted May 7, 2017 The G5 is not an approved backup for the G500. Like Marader said above, and also what I did, the L3 ESI-500 as backup. 1 Quote
231LV Posted May 7, 2017 Report Posted May 7, 2017 After checking into all this and looking at my checking account, I envy your wallet....this upgrade will be close to half the value of the plane. The G500 doesn't have the backup that the Aspen 2000 does but it sure look nice. Quote

I think having a backup alternator or second battery is a good idea for an all electric panel. Vacuum pumps are inexpensive and will keep spinning when the lights go out. Quote
Zwaustin Posted May 9, 2017 Report Posted May 9, 2017 That will be a really nice set up......I would recommend getting a GTN750 though for the modernized platform and get some sort of connectivity to it. I just picked up a FS510 for mine and it is super nice to be able to flight plan on the iPad, file and then send it right to the panel. Just did a round trip to Nashville and back from Austin this weekend using the 510 for first time and the ability to beam from foreflight to the GTN which obviously pushes to the G600 was great and saved me time from having to enter all the airways, is almost too easy. Coming previously from an Aspen and 430w I don't miss the 430 at all with its knob functions but didn't bother me while I had it. You could also trade the 530 out and go with a small non gps #2 nav/com and use a garmin remote audio panel to save some panel space....do you really need two GPS's in the 231? My panel was was done by Flite Electronics in Addison for what it's worth on the current bird. Feel free to hit me up if you have questions on the flight stream, JPI, 750's or the G500. I have really enjoyed the panel. Quote

Spend a little bit more and consider an ESI-500 Genesis from L-3 Avionics...you won't regret it. This installation removed both my vacuum systems; so with two alternators, two batteries, and a battery backup in the ESI-500, its far more reliable than any vacuum system, so take the opportunity and get rid of your vacuum system while you can. topsun1 Posted June 7, 2017 Report Posted June 7, 2017 Go for it! I bit the bullet two years ago and, after getting used to the new scan (took a while to break long held habits), haven't regretted it. G500 with two G430W's, new JPI, Transponder etc.. Actually wonder how I got along with out all this over the last 35 years. Still vacuum backup. Also still like my 496 for redundancy and the Sirius XM weather. The G500 pulls it all together wonderfully! Sorry about the flipped photo...my MAC didn't like something on the upload ??? 1 Quote
