Do we know the shop is stocking the battery? I don't see paying 20-30% markup for them to order the battery from Aviall, which is even more expensive than spruce

You're correct, we don't know if the shop had it on the shelf or if they had to order it for the customer.   The OP doesn't give any info other than the price of 466.16.  We don't know what type of battery was quoted, if it included installation labour, taxes, shipping, disposal or environmental fees etc.

Because there are so many posts along these same lines I'm asking "what mark up do people feel is fair and just?"

To all those doing their own in 20 mins-  did you include the time to charge it as per the instructions? Or did you even charge it?

Batteries are like Rodney Dangerfield- they don't get no respect :-)

Until you really need them and then you REALLY need them!

I picked up my battery at Spruce, it was charged and ready to go. Flew home, and installed it the next day when the engine wasn't hot. It's only about a half hour flight, I'd rather do that than pay for shipping on a battery or a few cases of oil.

  • Remove cowl, 5 minutes.
  • Remove old battery, including fetching tools around the wing, 5 minutes
  • Install new battery, 3 minutes
  • Write date on battery, including fetching get marker from toolbox, 1 minute
  • Close up, 10 minutes
  • Write in logbook, including looking at PPL in wallet, 3 minutes

I make that a half hour, but I'm pretty slow getting the top cowl put back on--it's easy to line up both back and one front corner . . . .

If anybody needs help, I can be hired for $100 per half hour to do most anything.

So from where you are in AL to the Peachtree City Aircraft Spruce location, round trip.....if you flew, that's a hefty delivery cost, isn't it?

And probably more than an hour just to acquire the battery.

Based on the total effort, $466 may be a bargain for anyone!

Nah, it's about an hour round trip. But oil is $18/case shipping, and Deborah or I usually remember something we need when we're at Spruce. Plus we get lunch somewhere in Peachtree City, it's a lunch run and a shopping trip, like bonal does all the time. We need to go to the Big City sometimes . . . . . And sometimes we visit people we know there. (cough! cough!)

Buy two cases of oil and the cost is a wash versus shipping. What's UPS charge to deliver a battery? Then I'd have to charge it, and people say that my simple variable rate car charger isn't up to the task, so how many hundred is the correct aeronautical charger to use every 5-6 years?

If you stop by here for lunch, I could show you where to buy your cases of oil cheaper than Spruce.....:)

If the mechanic is going to go to your plane with the battery then I'm sure his time is worth that price. If you are ordering the battery yourself and having them install it I would order from
http://www.chiefaircraft.com/aircraft/batteries/concorde-rg-batteries.html they are cheaper that spruce and have free ground shipping. Not paying for shipping can help offset the mechanic rate.

Spruce also ships their battery's at no cost and the difference in price is negligible. Go with the closest for fastest shipping if shipping time is important.
