Yep. I'm also a believer in the right tool for the job and have multiple vehicles for multiple missions.

You can get a 1999 Porsche 996 for 10K.  Kind of a hidden treasure.  WRX's are pricey.  They hold their value well for obvious reasons.  I agree its impossible to compare the performance of an airplane to a car.  I will say the Mooney is a dog compared to an RV-7 in performance.  You can't even spin a Mooney, but I guess its how you define performance.  The RV-7 can be considered a dog as a stable IFR, cross country airplane that you can take your family with on vacation.  That's why a person needs to practical airplanes just like he or she needs two practical cars.  A Porsche and a minivan.

Wow we are up to buying two airplanes?  CB club out the window on that.

Isn't that the point of being a cheap bastard? To enable you to buy two planes?

Watch what a CB drives so he can spend what's left on planes...

Agree with that. I only pay cash therefore to fly an M20K 252, I drive a pretty rough Toyota Tacoma 2006, 170K miles.

I doubt it has anything to do with Mooneys in particular. I think it has more to do with people that want an airplane to travel distances. I bet Bonanza, C-210, Commander, Malibu, etc owners also have similar stories of Porsches and european sports cars.

A Mooney most certainly does not handle like a Porsche. Anybody who thinks it does has either never flown a plane that has light, snappy handling, or has never driven a Porsche.

Jeez Dave.  The comparison was to a VW.  I stated that the Mooney is not slow...like a vintage air cooled 911.  The Mooney has a tight back seat and a sexy shape...like a vintage 911.  I didn't say it handles like a Porsche.  My thoughts are that it resembles a Porsche MUCH MORE than a Bug.  I have ZERO problem with how my E "handles".  It is predictable and simple to operate...like a vintage Porsche.  In the air less is more to me.  On the highway around "others" I will take ABS, and all the other various "S's" that a modern Porsche offers...including speed.

You're preaching to the choir brother.

I'm still driving my Matador in order to make the payments on my Mooney. On the other hand, my lovely wife deserves special consideration so I stepped it up and got her into a nice Maverick GT!

I recently sold my 73 911T and my daily driver is a 996 Carrera.  Without a doubt the 996 is the best track car out there not counting later cars produced by Porsche.   I know a lot of Mooney owners like to compare their airplanes to a Porsche and that's fine, but when I fly my Mooney the last thing I think of is racing my Porsche on a track. I have an experimental Bakeng Duce that's stick and rudder with 150hp. When I bore holes in the sky my Duce has that tight turning Porsche feel.  Nothing compared to Red Bull air racing but that's why those guys race Corvus Racer 540's and not Mooney's.

996 best track car? Having driven both in anger, I find that the mid-engined cars are better balanced (I'm not a minority in this assessment). The rear engine cars have a slight advantage accelerating out of the corners, but that can be almost completely negated with proper tire selection.  I love 911s, but with little more than camber plates and an alignment, the 986 and 987 cars are just about the finest handling machines you can buy at any price...no quirks other than a tendency toward understeer with the factory alignment settings (easily resolved).  Lotus is in the running if you want a fiberglass go cart with no amenities for the same money.

The Prius comparison falls way short philosophically.  A Mooney exhibits high performance, efficiency and it's also a pretty good looking design.  A Prius has but one of those traits.

Clarkson's top gear put a BMW M3 up against a Prius on it's test track. The Prius was driven all out and the M3 merely maintained the Prius's pace.  Prius turned 17.2mpg and BMW 19.4mpg. If Prius were anything like a Mooney, it would be nipping at the M3s heals on a lot less gas...

A better Auto comparison might be the Fiat Abarth. 1.4L, 30+MPG, 0-60 in under 7sec, top speed of 129 (governed).  That's an economy car with heart.

My current stable minus the Abarth which was re-homed in June in favor of a 3 series wagon (Baby mobile). 73 Triumph Daytona and 2002 986S will be on the sale block soon...

I've owned both Porsche and Lotus, and prefer the way Lotus handles to Porsche. I acknowledge that personal preferences are just that.

Depends on the model. Until you've driven a mid-engined Pcar in anger, you just can't know. Unfortunately their really remarkable traits are only revealed at 6/10s or more...

You may be right. I have only raced the rear engined ones.

I've owned a number of Porsches and went to get a Macan turbo (at the wife's insistence no less!) and wound up with an AMG instead. I am now a convert, especially after driving a version of my car at COTA.

13K miles later I still get a SEG when I get behind the wheel. First time I drove it I was taken back to the day my dad took me to drive go-karts.

As for Mooney, every time I TO I get a SEG. We had a discussion going on MAPAlist about non-Mooney CFI's. I prefer a young buck who has never flown in a Mooney for my FR. I always have such fun with them, but at the end of the hour they always ask me if they can do a landing. That in itself speaks for the marque.

Apples to oranges. Muscle car vs. sports car.
