My KLN 94 is coming out in the next 10 days and is for sale. It is working well and has a good display. It is IFR approved for enroute, terminal and approach (non VNAV) use. It will come with the tray, connector, antenna, data card writer, manual, update cable (laptop to KLN 94) Also eight database updates and the clunker laptop that I keep at the hangar to update the database. If interested, I can email you additional photos and video of the radio in operation or you can come and see it demonstrated in my Mooney (San Antonio area) until Wednesday when I take to the radio shop. $1,795 plus shipping.

The KLN94 is a very nice IFR GPS.  Great for a ship that doesn't have one and can't afford a new WAAS Avidyne or GTN.

BK does a great job of supporting the data / chart updates.

I used the KLN94 during my IFR training in C172s and my KL90B in my plane.  School planes / pilots are tough on the color screen.  It looks similar to a touch screen, but it isn't.

Always be aware of the I/Os to match your other hardware if you are integrating things together...

It is a direct slide-in replacement for a KLN89B. If you have a working KLN89B, slide it out, sell it and the KLN94 is a very inexpensive, but worthwhile upgrade.

Can the owner make the logbook entry? What else is required for legal IFR use?

Typical installation of an IFR navigator will have a couple of annunciators that may need to be installed.  Various rules required the distance of the radio stack to the center of the yoke to be short.  Without the annunciators, you probably won't see blinking on the panel.  See if you can get an audible signal with that.  Whoever did my install didn't include some options that are better to have than not have.

A couple of things the KLN can do... That I used for IFR flight...

- Turn anticipation, it can notify you when to turn to stay centered in the flyway...

- Altitude alert, it can be set to give a tone at 1,000' AGL (or select HAG for that alert?)

- Integrate with FF and FL and distance to final destination.

Go to the BK website and download the user manual for these details.  It is a pretty powerful device for 2000s technology.

The KLN 94 has its own annunciators. If it is mounted within a certain distance from your attitude indicator (assuming typical 6 pack instrument arrangement) no additional annunciator is required.  Mounted at the top of the left radio stack under the audio panel in my J model no additional annunciator is required or needed and it is fully IFR approved.

Unfortunately BK no longer supports the screen , and this unit does not support GPSS ,  It will however slide into most all 89b installs ,and almost all of these installs have a switch annunciator so it can share the primary nav indicator , ERGO it is almost always a slide in replacement for an 89B .....and only 89B , will not replace a 90B...

Alan do you know if it will fit in a kln89 (not 89b) tray.

What I learned about the -94 from my avionics guy.

It is a slide-in replacement for the -89B only.  It WILL work as a slide-in for the -89 but it will still be VFR only.  To be IFR, it requires an annunciator and many more connections to make it talk to the HSI and make the HSI talk to the -94.  I would be about 2-3 AMU to make it IFR for me.

Hi Matt,

Don't doubt what your radio guy says but I am having trouble understanding why an annunciator would be required. The 94 has the required annunciators built in and if the 94 is mounted at the top of the radio stack it is within the required distance of the attitude indicator. It was fully IFR approved in my J model without any external annunciator. And why would an annunciator be required to replace an 89 but not an 89b?

It's because mine is not in the center stack. If yours is in the center then you would not need the annunciator.

They could move it to the center in mine, but it's not cost effective. :(

So if you pulled the -94, what did you replace it with?  Photos of the upgraded panel would be nice...

Btw, I replaced the -89B with the -94 back in 2003.  Fairly simple for the shop...was a worthwhile upgrade at the time.  Now it's a bit outdated...but still works great!

I have the -90B with annunciators.

They work well for scanning instruments in IMC.

They only light when it's giving you an important need to know message.  Trying to get the same information off the -90B gets lost in the display.

When flying in VMC.... eyes are mostly out the window.  The chance of seeing either the annuciator or the -90B screen is terrible.

Audible alert in the headset would be much better.

whoever invented the annunciators did do his job until well into the new millennium...

That kind of need to know info Would benefit from being up where the eyes are at the time.  :)

Thinking out loud.

Best regards,
