DaveAnderson Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 Hi everyone, Saturday morning planned on flying to Yosemite (KMPI) for a weekend trip...got the plane loaded, IFR Clearance, and took the runway. Applied full power and instead of the usual 40"MP, it capped out about about 29". Aborted after about 200 feet, taxied back and put the bird back in the hangar and spent the next 8 hours in the car. First, i'm looking for a good mechanic in SD to come out to the plane. I'm based out of the Oceanside (KOKB) airport. Secondly, possible turbo failure? Cylinders all seemed to be operating withing normal t/o zones and the runup didn't indicate any issue with mags. So...if it is a turbo failure, any shops you guys recommend to either repair, or replace? Side note...Yosemite was incredible! Thanks, David Quote
carusoam Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 Based on the MP that you are seeing... Turbo not working or hose has become disconnected or broken. If it is bearing related, a mechanic can check it's oil lines to see if they are flowing normally. Did you hear the turbo wind-up as usual? Or just an eerie quietness from that area of the cowl? Things that come to mind of a PP, not a mechanic. Good luck with the long drives, -a- Quote
Hank Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 Yep, sounds like the turbo failed, rather than the hose coming loose. But a loose hose after the turbo will kill you, so check it out thoroughly! Quote
Piloto Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 It could be a stuck waste gate actuator in the open position. Try spraying WD-40 on the actuator linkage. José Quote
Zwaustin Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 Small induction leak around intercooler caused similar effect to me about a year ago. On ground power was decent but at altitude not much over 8k ft. Turned out to be a small tear in the inter coolers elbow duct. $90 dollar part, quick install and no issue since. Quote

wpbarnar Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 Recently had my turbo repaired at Don Maxwell's shop. He used Main Turbo systems to perform the overhaul. Their turn around time was good and no surprises on invoice. Cost came in a few dollars under the estimate provided over the telephone without looking at the unit. I have high regard for Don's choice of specialized shops. His recommendations have always been spot on. Bill 2 Quote

DaveAnderson Posted September 1, 2016 Author Report Posted September 1, 2016 I did notice some oil around one of the hoses that I hadn't seen before. I'm looking for a mechanic to come out, but thanks for the feedback guys. I'll let y'all know what happens. Quote
M20Kid Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 I landed at Oceanside a few months ago when I was really planing on landing at Carlsbad. The marine layer coming off the ocean came over Carlsbad but left a small cutout for Oceanside. Some great folks at the sky diving school made a fantastic experience; I would go back. If you find the turbo is bad, a +1 for Main Turbo - they did a great job on budget and on time when I needed them. Tailwinds! Rick 1 Quote

grami-air Posted September 2, 2016 Report Posted September 2, 2016 2 1/2 years ago I bought a M20K that was based out of Montgomery Field in San Diego, and all the work on the plane for the past 20+ years was performed at Crown Air, a Authorized Mooney Service Center. Just thought I would mention it as an option. Good luck. Don Quote
