Has anyone here installed an EDM-900 in a six cylinder turbo Mooney such as an M20K?  I know several have the EDM-930, but I'm interested in the EDM-900 for space issues.

I'm curious if you're able to have all the data on the screen that you need for normal operations such as EGT, CHT, and TIT, simultaneously.

Paul, several members have installed EDM900's.  Post a picture of your panel - lets see if it will fit.  If you can put it on the pilots side, then the EDM900 is great.  If you are in the second radio column, it will work, but on the far side its getting a bit small,

GSX - too bad I missed you...was just at HYI (McKee Avionics) for annual with Brian Kendrick a couple weeks ago.

Here's a couple of shots...hope these help...resolution should be good enough to zoom and pick up some detail.  Again, this is in an Ovation, so as Don stated, upload a pic or two so we can get some idea of fitting.  The placement on the right side is within legal limits for primary gauge fitting, but again, your situation will differ I'm sure, depending on model year.  Let us know if these help.

Regards, Steve

My main thoughts on this are not so much panel realestate but rather the cost.  The ONLY difference between the 900 and the 930 are screen size and $2500. So if the screen on the 900 is large enough to display the data needed in a 6 cylinder turbo, I'd rather save the $2500.

Here's the panel... I was thinking of taking out the ADF head directly under the gear switch and putting the 900 vertical there. I'll likely remove and sell the stormscope as well.

Your panel looks similar to mine when I bought it. I ditched the KNS80, ADF, stormscope and second comm. It really cleaned things up. I have the 830 but really like it on the pilot side. I previously had the 700 on the right. The installer wanted the 830 vertically (for ease of installation) but I like it horizontal as seen in the pic.

Paul, you mention above your thoughts aren't about panel real estate but rather cost, yet your original post mentions interest in space issues and nothing about cost.

??

Sorry about the confusion.  I guess both space and cost are a concern.  But if it makes sense, the space issue is actually a cost issue as well.  I think I could pull a couple of round instruments and get the 900 installed.  I think I'd have to redo the entire right side of the panel to get the 930 installed thus much higher installation cost.

You seem to be missing your Johnson Bar.

It's the ONLY thing I'm missing... but if the Johnson Bar was available as an option in the K, I'd have one.

Yeah, good points really.  Fixing space issues can cost in not only labor, but in custom panels to make everything look right.  I was just looking at my final invoice, and realized our custom panels for the whole install came up to just over 8k.  Granted, the CB panel got a whole new redo, along with nearly every breaker replaced, but it's exactly what I wanted, and I sleep better at night knowing that everything behind that panel is exactly where it should be and was rebuilt impeccably.  Honestly, seeing the quality and integrity of the end result has helped me justify the costs a bit easier.

When do you think you'll be starting the work?

Honestly, I just picked up the plane and have only flown it once. If I can live with the EDM-700 for a little while, I'll probably put the work off until next year. Here in Texas, August is the time for maintenance, upgrades, annuals, etc. as it's too damn hot to fly.  I might spend the next several months planning and removing stuff out of the panel that isn't really that useful. Then see what deals are available at OSH next year with plans to do the work in August 2017.

Paul,

Congratulations on your new 252. One gets used to a turbo quickly - eh (one flight and you're hooked)?

I have an EDM-700 in my Bravo. I set the "Index Rate" to 1 so the unit steps through each cylinder and other parameters every second instead of the 3 or 4 second default. I found this makes the unit much more usable as engine management on a turbocharged airplane is more critical on a turbo than normally aspirated. I prefer one of the units that show CHT's, TIT and FF all the time. Have you gotten any training on engine management? If not, I highly recommend it.

Here's a quick video of a turbocharged engine (TIO-540 pushed to 400 HP) being run on a test stand:

I went with the UBG-16 for cost and no need to remove or relocate existing instruments. You can replace the TIT gauge with the UBG-16 in the same hole. Aside CHT/EGT/TIT you can read Volts, fuel flow, OAT and others. The display head is short to fit in. Also the numericals are big easy to read from the pilot side. Very happy with it.
