Thanks guys.  I like the idea of the Ram mount but I fear I will have clearance problems like I do with the Garmin mount.  My HDG knob is right there and even if it wasn't I wouldn't be able to get full forward elevator.  With the 201 yokes I'm not sure if I can make a mount similar to the other ones described or not...  I like the idea of the center post mount maybe I'll give that a try.  I'd really like to see some pics of the other installs first though if anyone is willing.

Thanks

I finally got out to the airport and attached are some pics of my 496 mount. I have a South West Texas Aviation instrument panel with a STec 30A, Aspen PFD 1000 and a Garmin 430 WAAS. The 496 is a very good add on for weather and it get's routes directly from the 430.

I am getting my interior refurbed by Aero Comfort and am getting the sleek new leather wrapped yokes I see on many of the Mooneyspace planes.  My Garmin 496 is currently mounted on the yoke via a mount that is screwed down on the top of the yoke between the hands.  I really hate to punch a hole in the leather of my new yokes when I get them back.  Does anyone have a favorite non-actual-yoke mount device?  For those using the RAM-B-121-238U in an M20J is there plenty of clearance?

Thanks

I rigged up a ram mount under the throttle quadrant.  Easy to see and accessible.  I like to keep as little as gear as possible pointed at my heart and lungs....

Here's my solution! OK, so mine isn't a Garmin, but it's a Ram mount, so it can be customized. My Mx attached it to the panel and it just sits in front of the audio panel, and it is not hiding anything, except for the ADF.

I've been struggling with the same issue.  I've got my 396 mounted on my yoke, and keep looking for an alternative mounting, but I just can't seem to find one that puts the 396 in a place that's easy to scan and easy to reach without obstructing my view outside the cockpit.  So I'm stuck with the yoke mount.  My biggest gripe is the XM and power cords coming out the back give a sloppy appearance... but the functionality is just what I'm looking for.  I would love for a way to "have my cake and eat it too," but I just can't seem to find a way to do it.

How do you guys with yoke mounts bundle your cables?  have you attached them to the dash so they are more discreet and then just leave them in the aircraft?  Also, where do you guys put your XM Weather puck?  I have mine velcro'ed to the dash, but the velcro tends to come off if it's hot outside.... If I just set it up on the dash it moves around too much and sometimes falls back into my lap when I'm in a climb....

I really have no complaints about the location of my 496 as far as looking out the cockpit for traffic goes.  It's a small area and it's low enough that it obstructs maybe 2% of my view.  I'll take that trade off with getting it off the yoke and further away from my chest area should something happen.  The wires are run behind the dash and I have the puck vecroed to the dash.  I haven't had any issues with it coming off, even in the Kansas heat as off late.

Further up towards the top off the thread is a picture of what it looked like with it mounted on the yoke before I moved it back in December.

Can I ask where you got this one?  Can you PM me?  I have an AV8OR as well.

I agree that the yoke is the best place for visibility and accessibility. I made a small bracket and clamped onto the shaft. I routed the wires inside the shaft, so I don't have dangling wires. I had the 396 connected to an external antenna and the XM antenna mounted underneath the glareshield. It works so well that I cannot find a reason to install a 530 or even a GTN-750. The perspective view of the 396 on the yoke provides a larger and clearer image than that of the 530 on the center stack. In fact it is the same size as that of the GTN 750. Very happy with my configuration.

The XM antenna underneath the glareshield works even inside the hangar.  I am able to get XM signal all the way to GTK, with no difference in heading. I use an external white Garmin GPS antenna with the 396. Satellite signals are almost always max level. But I am sure it will work as well with the small black remote GPS antenna underneath the glareshield just like the XM antenna. Where the yoke location shines is on approach with thunderstorms in the vicinity. Not only can you see clearly the location of the cells in relation to your path but you can easily switch screens an zoom settings under turbulence without loosing sight of the key flight instruments.
