I'm about to have my panel re-done, including moving the gauges into a standard 6-pack configuration and moving some of the others around. Is it possible to install the gauges along the top in a C model? I understand this would require buying new gauges, if it's even possible. If not, I'll stick with the regular gauges, I'm just looking to be more efficient with the space I have. I won't be installing anything new right now, though an Insight Avionics G3 might go in at some point (thanks for showing me, gsxrpilot!).

If you are serious about putting a J style engine cluster in, let me know. You can have the ones I removed from my F. It is the same style as the early J models and all work...

You will need an approval.  Forget field approvals as the FAA will not do it.  SW Texas aviation had an STC panel which allowed the use of the J model gauges but I do not think he is doing this any longer.  You can call Russell Stallings and ask if he will sell you the STC.  Otherwise, you can hire a DER who can give you the authority to use the J model gauges in your early model plane.  Or you can simply put in the JPI 830 or 930 which is the best route to take.

Some older Mooneys have had their gauge clusters replaced with Mitchell gauges. If you went that route you could probably customize the layout into a row instead of the square six-pack.

I can't get a 337 approved for this? If it ends up being that big of a deal or costs a ton of money, I'll just keep the gauges where they're at. I was just looking to be a bit more efficient.

Like this?....I can take more pics if needed.

That's exactly what I'm looking to do. Nice looking panel.  :)

All the senders are different , its a major undertaking for very little reward,   You can get used Garwin clusters for parts for anywhere from 100 to 300 dollars , and a JPI will bring you into the 20th century....as long as you leave in the factory cluster you can install a non certified primary gage...will be much easier and cost effective....

That's what I'm starting to lean towards. I didn't realize that replacing the gauges was such a task. Given the information in this thread, I may very well just lean towards the Insight Avionics G-series and leave the gauges where they are. They work fine and it's not a huge deal if they remain where they are. The Insight Avionics also gives the same information as the JPI but in a smaller package that takes up less space on the panel.

The Insight g series can be primary replacement, at a lower cost than JPI.

The SWTA panel STC used the 201 gauges. I have the STC but wanted drawings on the cluster I have. I had a few Inoped items...I called them, all the drawings were lost in a tornado and lost all the data.

I would not install the J gauges unless you already had them in the panel. Same issues as the old clusters. Best bet is to bring the airplane into the 21st century.

Get an MVP-50. Does it all and then some.

The CDI will move when I upgrade my pilot side. My IA wouldn't let me take out the tach.
