PMcClure Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 I have an Ovation 1 with factory lights. Each side has a taxi light and landing light. The right landing light usually does not last more than 30 hours. I have replaced it at least 3 times in 2 years. The other 3 bulbs have never been replaced. Any thoughts why it's always the right one? Quote
M20F Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 Vibration kills bulbs more than anything else so my guess would be it rattles more than the left, get an LED. Quote
rgpilot Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 There is a service bulletin explaning how to rotate the element to the vertical position to lessen shock vibration and extend bulb life. Quote
gsengle Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 I went with the whelan self contained LED bulbs. 1) they don't burn out, 2) much lower electrical load and 3) brighter... But $$$ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

LANCECASPER Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 On the wing mounted lights once you have skinned up your hands changing these bulbs a few times, LED lights seem much more worth it. Also finding that your incandescent bulb is burned out when going into a dark field makes it worth it. On another airplane I had the Original Whelen Parmetheus which weren't quite bright enough. On my Ovation I now have the Teledyne Alphabeam which are great and highly recommended. I leave them on whenever the master is on. Quote
gsengle Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 That's an important point, you end up feeling free to use them as always on anti collision lights.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Piloto Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 The right wing light failure could be related to the right wheel balance. Check that the red dot on the tire is line up with the valve on the wheel. As others have indicated LEDs is the way to go.  José Quote
PMcClure Posted August 16, 2015 Author Report Posted August 16, 2015 Thanks, the self contained LED seems like a great option. And thanks rgpilot for the tip on the service bulletin. Â Is there a direct LED bulb replacement or more to it? Any links or advice where to purchase and costs? Quote
gsengle Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 Looks like many options exist now... http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/el/ledlighting_landing.html Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
StevenL757 Posted August 18, 2015 Report Posted August 18, 2015 +1 for the Whelen Parmetheus Plus. I have four in my Ovation, and love them. I went from the GE bulbs to the "first generation" Parmetheus, and then to the "Plus" just recently...which are 40% brighter than their predecessors. Some folks swear by the HID lights, but they tend to draw more than the LED. They also tend to spread light over a wider lateral angle instead of focusing it on the runway environment, but like other hardware, your personal preference and mileage may vary. Also took the opportunity to do a pair of Orion OR650E for the wing tips and an OR500 for the tail...the flashing portions all synchronize. I LOVE them. Several towers have commented...particularly at night. Whelen Orion and Parmetheus: http://www.whelen.com ("Aviation home" --> "New Products") 3 Quote
NotarPilot Posted August 18, 2015 Report Posted August 18, 2015 Steve, did you do a log entry, 337 or a field approval for your Orion lights? Quote
Robert C. Posted August 18, 2015 Report Posted August 18, 2015 Pretty sure Aviation Consumer recently had an article comparing various technologies, makes and models. Came with a photo series showing brightness and coverage. Quite illuminating actually Robert Quote
StevenL757 Posted August 19, 2015 Report Posted August 19, 2015 Steve, did you do a log entry, 337 or a field approval for your Orion lights? A logbook entry by my IA was all that was needed. Quote
Awful_Charlie Posted August 19, 2015 Report Posted August 19, 2015 What are you guys doing to your bulbs? I'm still on the bulbs that the 'plane came with 5 years ago Quote
PMcClure Posted August 31, 2015 Author Report Posted August 31, 2015 I have the new LED light installed. It will be interesting to compare the differences with the other original lights. I'll let everyone know once I get a chance to go out there at night! Quote

I'll let everyone know once I get a chance to go out there at night! Attached you can see the new LED light on the Right Side verses the standard on the left. The standard is brighter with more coverage, but I was not disappointed by the LED replacement. On landing, there was little noticeable difference. There was almost no current draw on the LED. I will replace the others as they go out. Quote
LANCECASPER Posted September 17, 2015 Report Posted September 17, 2015 Which one did you put in? Quote
