Speaking of strobes, what are people using for rotating beacon strobes?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I replaced my Whelen blinky light with a Whelen LED flasher. Wish the wingtip LED nav & strobe combos cost less than the much larger, two-color belly strobe!

Photos to follow, not on the iThingy or my phone . . .

I used the Whelen LED beacon.  Much brighter, less current draw and no mechanically driven parts.  Thus more reliable and less weight.

Use use an adapter ring mounted to the airframe which screws in like the old beacon, and the Whelen LED beacon mounts to that with screws.

My Whelen LED unit used the same adapter ring as my old Whelen flasher, which was high voltage (>500 V) and also had no moving parts. Here are photos of the old and the new--note how much smaller the LED unit is.

And like all LEDs, it's pretty bright.

Back on topic: These are what I'd really like LED upgrades for, my nav lights, with added LED strobe. While we're at it, let's replace this barely visible tail light, too. The Orion nav lights each cost more than the belly strobe! Are there any reasonably-priced legal alternatives?

I replaced all of my exterior lights with Whelen LED products (Orion series) and spent about $1,700. While this is a big initial investment it's probably the last time I'll ever have to buy lights for my plane, it makes preflighting quicker and easier, it draws less power and they run cooler thereby allowing all lights to remain on from engine start to shut down. So when you add up all of these benefits they seem quite worth it.
