gsxrpilot Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 So coming back home from Oshkosh, I'm on FF with Austin Approach level at 7500ft. "Mooney 6XM maintain 5500 or above, traffic 12 o'clock 4500 a Cessna same direction." About 3 min later... "Austin Approach, Mooney 6XM in the decent to 5500." The response... "Mooney 6XM, Approach, delete altitude restriction, traffic no-factor. You've overtaken the Cessna and have at least 50 knots on him." Mooney's -- We Love to Fly FAST! 2 Quote
Danb Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 Paul you've hit a nerve, I just got back from a long trip about 15 hours of flying 1. Why don't controllers have a concept of planes other than heavy meal 2. They should at Least be required to fly in a GA plane to realize our descent isn't 3000ftm 3.. I was coming into Kilg New York center kept met at 10000ft 10 min. Out so after three times of asking for lower I had to cancel and work my butt off to get down 4. Asked for a reduction from 10000 to 8000 and they couldn't due to traffic , of which I overtook 15 minutes later easily I could have been given the 8000 5 just on this trip I found the ATC to be lazy, incompetent or both or have no clue re small aircraft That's enough for now Quote
bonal Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 One time at band camp we were over the Mojave desert heading for Las Vegas and Joshua control had us climb "Mooney 14u climb 500 Bonanza five miles behind same heading same altitude. Mooney 14u climbing 500 looking for traffic." He never caught up. Quote

bonal Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 The black bird clearly the most bad assed aircraft ever made. Loved reading that story Quote
yvesg Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 I wonder how many Mooney pilots are fans of the blackbirds? I am one for sure. Have read all books about Kelly Johnson, Ben Rich, Skunk Works et al. Sadly, I discovered this passion after they got grounded for good. I wish I could have seen one flying. Yves 1 Quote
Danb Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 Blackbirds are definitely cool..I just lust over Marine's Corsair 1 Quote

Hank Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 Well, I have often wondered if controllers had higher expectations for our slow old C ... because us old Cs use the same aircraft code as an Acclaim or Bravo? I get excited at showing 150 ground speed. 187 is the best ground speed I remember? M20P ... Is there any other code?, There's only two codes: M20P for us, Js and Rs; M20T for Ks, Ms and Acclaims. Easy to remember: T is for Turbo. At least they should recognize us as being faster than Cessnas . . . I was limping home across the southern edge of ATL, with what turned out to be my carb heat stuck open, and ATC asked if I was really a Mooney. A Baron went by 50 knots faster, and commented that he was using much more than twice my fuel. Even slow and into the wind, I had to laugh. Quote
Marauder Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 Blackbirds are definitely cool..I just lust over Marine's Corsair Here's something for you Dan... I also have a video of one starting up at my airport. Let me see if I can load that up. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
peevee Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 At least they should recognize us as being faster than Cessnas . . . faster than a cessna? Which cessna? A 310? A 206, a T210? A 152? A 207? There are a lot of cessnas out there, they aren't going to know which one is 10kts faster than which other one. I'm not sure you want me to relay the reputation mooney pilots have... Quote

DonMuncy Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 Strangely enough Paul, I am curious as to our purported reputation, and the source. I really never thought much about the subject until one day I was attending a tour of the DFW ATC facilities and one of the tour guides told me that Mooney pilots had a reputation for "having more performance than they could handle". I suspect that most of the people here (by virtue of caring enough about aviation to read and contribute) don't fit that reputation. But I do care about how we are perceived and especially since I had that conversation, I have redoubled my efforts to try to make sure I don't come across that way. 1 Quote
Hank Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 faster than a cessna? Which cessna? A 310? A 206, a T210? A 152? A 207? Chill out, dude! Even my relatively slow C will outrun C-152, 172 and 182 models. Every C-310 I've ever seen is called "Twin Cessna," and few normally-aspirated planes will keep up with any production turbo models. At least you left out the turboprops! 1 Quote
carusoam Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 Do Citation pilots say "I fly a Cessna" out loud? They probably do at CessnaSpace.com... There is a place for everyone, -a- Quote
Hank Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 Do Citation pilots say "I fly a Cessna" out loud? They probably do at CessnaSpace.com... There is a place for everyone, -a- When I was flying south to Cody, WY at 8500 msl, having trouble finding the airport (I was looking way past it, trying to judge 12-15 miles by the edge of visibility instead of distance above the cowl), and heard two reports of "Cessna XXX departing Cody, Runway 4" and "Cessna XXX, out of Cody, flying runway heading." Looking ahead, I still couldn't see him, and said so. Then I heard, "Cessna--uh, Citation XXX out of Cody, flying runway heading," and I looked to the left and saw him climbing out over the 14,000' peaks . . . 1 Quote
