I've have a spare set zip tied in my battery compartment.

I have a set inside a Velcro hide-a-key on the back of an access panel. I figured finding a philips screwdriver is more likely than getting a set of Mooney keys cut somewhere.

Have any of you successfully copied your Mooney keys? I tried taking them to the hardware store and they couldn't do it.

I have - both my former Mooney and Current one. No issues - non chain good small hardware store.

Just curious, how many sets of keys were originally supplied by the Mooney factory when the aircraft was delivered to the new owner? More specifically if anyone knows a first generation Ovation (1995).

   Thanks, Ron

The wife always carries a set in her purse (hardly ever go flying without her along)

BUT found out last week her ignition key didn't work. We could get in but not start it.

Had to go back home for mine that I left there. DUH!

i'm going to use the velcro/insp. panel idea also.

Running around the airport today doing multiple things. I saw a helicopter that was about to blow our M20 into a Micco. So I moved both while he was cranking up. Then unlocked the mooney to secure the flight controls. Locked it, threw the keys in my cargo pocket and went to help a friend in his hangar. A few hours later, I noticed the airplane keys dangling from a thread outside my cargo pocket!! A hole! Who knew!!

Keys are now stashed in a good spot. Partner has a spare, but looks like another set is in order.

I bought a new Bravo in 1996 and got two sets.

A Cessna 152's keys on the field opens my Mooney's door. That Cessna is no more :)

Thanks for the heads up Sriram. Now I know I have a key to your beauty.

I have a set hidden on the airframe but in a pinch it isn't all that tough to hotwire an ajrplane. Simplest and least safe being just running jumper cables from the battery to the starter. At some point I want to replace my key start with a button like you would see on a twin just to make things a lot easier. After reading this thread odds are I will now lose a set of keys.....

When I was actively working as an A&P, we had a big ring of keys, probably about 30 or so. There was no airplane on the airport that we couldn't unlock the doors or start the engine using one of those keys, unless it had specialty locks (like Medeco).

Thanks for the warm welcome gentlemen! The question may have been a little OCD, but I'm working on a purchase with an original owner 1995 Ovation. Who couldn't remember how many sets of keys he actually has or ever had. LANCECASPER, if I may ask was there a Leather carrying bag (with MOONEY embossed on the side) for all of the manuals and such also included?

 Cheers, Ron

I locked the keys up in a plane several years ago 600 miles from home. The guy at the fbo smiled and went back inside. He came back out a few minutes later with a large ring full of keys. About the 10th one opened up the door.

When I first bought my Mooney I forgot to bring keys to my first flight with my instructor. We went over the logs as he is also an IA. Then went out to look at it. We talked to some guys on the field and the first one tried his key and the door unlocked.

I made about 8 spare Mooney keys and have them strewn about by house, cars, bags, airplane, etc.  I also gave on to my wife.  It's usually the only one anyone ever knows the location of.
