FloridaMan Posted November 10, 2014 Report Posted November 10, 2014 I'm tied down on the ramp at ICT. TAF forecasts 38kt winds tonight; should I pay the 60$ to have my Mooney stored inside tonight or is it nothing to be too worried about? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted November 10, 2014 Report Posted November 10, 2014 I've found Mooney's do pretty good tied down. I've seen Cessna's flying on their tie down chains and my Mooney was sitting there like nothing was happening. Once in Tucson, A storm came through and the Mooney came loose from the chains. It broke both tie down chains and blew across the ramp until stopped by a King Air propeller. I had a small dent in the trailing edge of the elevator where it hit the King Air. Other than that no damage. If you have strong tie downs, I wouldn't worry about it. I would worry about other stuff being blown into the Mooney. I used to fly into Casper Wyoming all the time. a 38 KT wind would be considered a gentle breeze. Quote
pinerunner Posted November 10, 2014 Report Posted November 10, 2014 If you could arrange for it to be pointed into the wind the whole time then maybe not so bad unless something blows into it. But 45 kt side winds on the tail feathers makes me nervous. That's not the kind of load it was designed for. I'm glad I'm in a hangar. Say I just got upgraded to "Lives here" Quote
bonal Posted November 10, 2014 Report Posted November 10, 2014 For 0.060 AU I would. It would suck to have your Mooney tied down and have a Cessna that broke its chains slam into it. Quote
MB65E Posted November 10, 2014 Report Posted November 10, 2014 Wow 60 bucks!!! That's a deal for not having an insurance claim. If it was 150-200/ night I'd think about it, but not $60. But the hangar door could blow off and/or the line guy could bend the nose strut too... That's been my luck... Morbid I know... -Matt Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 10, 2014 Report Posted November 10, 2014 That's unfortunately quite common around here! I wouldn't sweat it much so long as I had a cabin cover on to protect the window from flying stuff and the yokes secured. (They're building a new terminal at KICT so there is construction activity). What brings you to town? Quote

FloridaMan Posted November 10, 2014 Author Report Posted November 10, 2014 It's in the hangar tonight. I felt my rental car getting pelted with sand. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 Good call. If it makes you sleep easier then it is worth every penny. I hope you brought some cold weather gear! It is getting NASTY tonight. 1 Quote
Dave Marten Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 Tie down facing north if able (into the wind) snug up the ropes and you'll be fine. BTW those winds are bringing in lows in the 20s hope you brought a warm coat along. Winds will drop off tonight. Enjoy. Quote
rob Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 You could probably do better at 3AU, for future reference... Quote
StinkBug Posted November 15, 2014 Report Posted November 15, 2014 Hmm, that picture looks familiar. At least the RV has good taste in cars to ruin. :-p 1 Quote
kmyfm20s Posted November 15, 2014 Report Posted November 15, 2014 Hmm, that picture looks familiar. At least the RV has good taste in cars to ruin. :-p I see your at CRQ, I hope it not yours! It was a great looking RV the only funny part was the car selection it took out. I was the 2nd plane to land after that storm came through MYF. Quote
StinkBug Posted November 15, 2014 Report Posted November 15, 2014 Nope, not mine. Several of the planes in my club were damaged by that storm though, and the Mooney I'm looking at buying is based at MYF and barely escaped being hit by one of the pilotless flying cessnas. Pretty crazy day for sure. Quote
