Aerophile Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 I recently partnered up with a guy who owns an M20J-MSE and have been doing some instruction in it. The airplane is equipped with gravity fed aux tanks. Now, the placards on the airplane say that each aux tank has a 14.5 gallon capacity. The supplement says that the aux tanks add 34 gallons total, but it goes on to say that each tank has a 14.5 gallon capacity. So my question is, where is the extra 5 gallons? Quote
philipneeper Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 It doesn't count in the total unusable fuel does it? Quote
M20F-1968 Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 The MSE most likely has speed brakes. If so, that reduces the aux tanks by 5 gallons total making 14.5 gallons a side. There is also 1/2 gallon of unusable fuel per side. John Breda 1 Quote
201er Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 10 extra gallons of fuel sure are more useful than speed brakes 0:-) Quote
ArtVandelay Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 10 extra gallons of fuel sure are more useful than speed brakes 0:-) We're talking about 93 gal vs 103 gal, that's like 9hr vs 10 hrs flight time. You have to be crazy to spend 9 hrs in a small plane let alone 10 Quote

He has been known to have spent 11 hours in the left seat of Mooney non stop. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

carusoam Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Why not ask José... Best regards, -a- Quote
Piloto Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 John is right. If the plane has speed brakes the capacity is reduced by 5 gallons total. If you refill the aux tanks next day you can add up to 5 gallons total. This is due to the aux tanks filling the airspace in the mains overnight. Don't forget your P-bottle. José 1 Quote

Aerophile Posted July 22, 2014 Author Report Posted July 22, 2014 Ok that makes a lot of sense. Yes the airplane does have speed brakes. Thanks for your help. The next question I have is how much horsepower does Firewall Forwards Horsepower Plus STC add to the 200 HP IO-360? I have found literature in the supplements but none of it comes out and says how much horsepower it has with the larger cylinders. Firewall Forward's websites doesn't help much either. Quote
aaronk25 Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Might want to google that shop, lot of upset customers. Quote
