When: August 13 - 15 (Friday through Sunday)

Where: Jekyll Island, Georgia 09J http://skyvector.com/airport/09J/Jekyll-Island-Airport

What:  An informal fly-in of Mooney owners purely to relax and enjoy the beauty, fascinating history and world class amenities of storied Jekyll Island.  http://www.jekyllisland.com/

There are no planned events, presentations, talks, displays, vendors.  Just an open schedule for the weekend so everyone can gather as they wish and talk Mooneys or enjoy the many activities and interests the island offers.  Of course, anyone who may want to schedule something--golf, croquet, fishing, a Mooney activity--is welcome to post ideas and details below.

The Jekyll Island Club Hotel has, as of this posting, plenty of rooms available.  Or you can select from other options on the island.  http://www.jekyllclub.com/  The Club is a short walk from the airport or they will pick you up.  They also have the "to die for" Sunday brunch everyone can enjoy before departing.

Google "jekyll island" to learn more about the activities, the cool rental cars, the location and the history and you'll get a sense of why this destination was chosen as a fly-in.

Sounds like fun. But if it's that informal how will we even know who's part of the group? Name tags all weekend?

I had a bad experience at Jekyll Island FBO last week. I had to fly in on a business trip and had called a couple weeks ago about transportation. Red Bug runs the FBO and their main business is renting the electric carts. I explained that I didn't need to rent a cart, just needed transportation to the hotel. They agreed that they would provide me with transportation. The day before my flight I called Red Bug back to confirm transportation and give them my arrival time. Again, they said they would provide transportation. Upon arriving at 09J we met a representative from Red Bug (surly gentleman) who quickly stated that Red Bug didn't provide transportation and all he could do for me was rent me a cart for $75.0 per 24 hours. I told him of my previous calls and he said he didn't know who I spoke with, it wasn't him, and he wasn't going to take us anywhere. Fortunately the hotel where the conference was being held agreed to come pick us up even though they don't have a shuttle. I definitely have a bad taste in my mouth for Jekyll Island and particuiarlly the FBO.

Sorry to hear about the problem with the FBO. That's complete nonsense.

Be sure to leave feedback about them on AirNav. That will get their attention.

Jim, count me in.  I have always enjoyed visiting Jekyll Island and especially the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.  To the prior poster with the bad experience, clearly there is some confusion on what the airport offers.  RedBug is not an FBO, they rent carts.  That's it.  Asking RedBug for a free ride is like asking Avis for a ride, but you don't want to rent a car.  As far as shuttle service goes, the Club Hotel has always been happy to pick us up at 09J.  Make sure you tell them Jekyll Island Airport.  Otherwise they may go to Brunswick instead.

Whenever I have stayed at the Club Hotel, we call when exiting the airplane to be picked up.  By the time, I push back the airplane, tie down, and unload, the van is there.  They load the bags up in the van and deliver them directly to your room.  Last time I was there, I wanted to play some golf.  The Club Hotel was happy to take just me to the course at my convenience.  When I was done playing, I simply called the hotel and they picked me up in under 10 minutes.  They do the same for people wanting to go to the beach.  This is a historic 4 diamond hotel.  They know service.

Well, I could go on and on, but I won't.  Jekyll is one of my favorite destinations.  The history, the views, and the food all have great appeal.

Looking forward to August.

Just made reservations today so we're looking forward to the short vacation. My wife made one comment: "I hope the weather's okay, like,  you know, no hurricanes or anything." Doh! I'd plumb forgotten that's right in the middle of hurricane season. But we'll take our chances...there's enough warning these days, and a Mooney can outrun any old hurricane!

Also, I sent a note to the SE-Mooney mailing list, but we should at least try to get together for cocktails either Friday or Saturday night.  That shouldn't be too hard to arrange. I'm happy to organize that if other people are interested.

FYI, I got an e-mail from the club hotel that they are having a special for August; buy one night, get one free. I don't think that is on their website. You have to call and mention the special. The offer is good through the end of July.

Hello Everyone,

I just spoke with Patty at the Jekyll Island Club and we decided that the best place to get together on Friday evening would be The Pub. It sounds like a nice, casual place, pilots generally like pubs, and it opens to a courtyard so there's plenty of room.

So they will be expecting a group of Mooney Pilots at 5:30pm at The Pub on Friday, August 13.  I'll send out a note to the SE Mooniacs group and posting it on that Facebook page as well.  If I'm really on the ball I'll even try to get some nametags so we could look official! I look forward to meeting everyone there.

Just to let everyone know...if you're interested in joining us let the Jekyll Club reservations people know when you call that you want the get-a-second-night-for-free deal!  So stay Friday night and then again Saturday night for free!

Jeff,

Thanks for arranging the cocktail gathering!  We might want to think about a group reservation for dinner Saturday night (for those who plan to eat at the Jekyll Club) and definitely for the Sunday brunch.  Maybe 8:00pm Saturday evening and 10:00am Sunday morning?

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

I figure we can decide on Friday night about further activities, based on who actually shows up. We're planning on a pretty relaxing stay, haven't even rented a vehicle at this point, so will probably be dining at the Club. Sunday Brunch, as delicious as that sounds, may be a bit more problematical for us as my wife is still a bit of a nervous flyer and typically doesn't each much before getting in the plane. But she's getting better so we'll see!

Hello all,

For those folks who are going to make it to Jekyll Island this weekend, the informal cocktail hour for Friday evening has now been moved to the Lobby Bar at 5:30.  They have decided to close The Pub due to noise complaints from guests...and to think, the truly unruly Mooney Pilots haven't even arrived yet!

I look forward to meeting folks there.  Cheers.
