CODY, Wyo. - A missing plane belonging to a Seattle pilot and his brother has been spotted on a mountain slope in a remote area of Wyoming not far from Yellowstone National Park, officials said.

The plane, a 1963 Mooney M20C aircraft that was reported missing on Saturday, was spotted Monday morning by the Park County (Wyo.) sheriff's search and rescue team on the eastern slope of Howell Mountain.

The condition of the two brothers who were flying in the craft is still unknown because rescuers have been unable to reach the crash site.

The two - identified earlier as Ward H. Zimmerman, 86, of Seattle and his brother Robert, 84, of Huntsville, Ala. - were on a cross-country trip when their plane disappeared.

Deepest condolences to their loved ones. If it's of any consolation they died doing what they loved to do.

Condolences to the families. I told my family that if I die in a plane crash, that is NOT the way I wanted to go! There's lots of things I love to do and I can't think any of them would be the way to go.

The reported weather from dawn to dark in Cody on May 6 was fairly low overcast most of the day with some precipitation falling at times, temperature at the surface in the 40s.   No flight plan appears to have been filed, at least none shows on FlightAware for N6704U on May 6.  FlightAware reports the plane flew in to Cody on May 5.   Noteworthy that the KTBV article says they departed 6 May, a Tuesday, and were reported missing only on Saturday, May 10.

The owner per FAA registry has a private SEL, no instrument rating.  His brother also has private SEL also no instrument rating.

Hindsight is of course razor sharp, but it does not appear to have been a good day to fly the Rockies VFR.

I just learned that this is Bob Zimmerman. Flies out of Moontown near here. N6704U is his aircraft ,I think the link shows someone elses plane. A very nice man, accomplished aviator. He and his wife had many adventures flying the Mooney across the Gulf of Mexico on into South America.

I wonder if they survived the crash but were unable to or did not want to leave the accident site hoping for rescue. A very sad ending to 2 accomplished lives hopefully they did not suffer long. I guess there are worse ways to go than next to your brother.

A couple of really smart and accomplished guys. Too bad they didn't think to buy a hand held Garmin GPS that has terrain mapping in it. How it is that people launch off into terrible weather and end up crashing into mountains in this day and age is beyond me. I fly anywhere near a hill and my 696 lights up all red. Hard to miss.

Tragic, but likely a painless and instant death. Can't ask for more and with the brothers together after a life of adventure. It really seems like it was meant to be. Terribly sad for the family though, they must miss them something fierce. :(

Would have loved to have known them. Some truth there, in what you say Dave. A tragedy for sure that handheld technology, for a few hundred bucks, could have prevented? Ironic in that his youngere brother designed equipment used in current jets...
