Yes, public records are public....kind of.

It's interesting that many aircraft owners are masked by LLC's, or Corporations. Others hide in fractional arrangements.

Lot's of the rich/ powerful/ famous don't want people to know they own a high-dollar plane, or where they are flying.

Try to find out where your favorite fund manager is flying his Global this week end! There are ways to hide.

"Hiding" behind an LLC or corp is not really hiding.  Just a couple more searches to get the information. or get fancy with a D&B search.   Also if you know the pattern of flights type of plane/destinations and such you can figure it out.

I don't understand why aircrafts are public records. Cars, motorcycles  are not.   Are boats public records ?

"Death from above" Cars and motorcycles are considered a right, airplanes a privilege. Don't agree with it, by that is the way it is treated.

what about boats ?

Kind of in between. If you own a rowboat it's a right, If it's powerboat it's a privilege. :)

ok. but I don't think boat registration is public info. or is it ?

Probably varies from state to state.  Driving a car or motorcycle in my state is definitely a privilege but registration information is not publicly available.  Imagine what some loon who's still pissed you cut him off this afternoon might do if he could look up your address on his i-thing before he cooled off.

While collecting data for days-on-the-water to apply for a master's license, I found that boat registration records are not publicly available in my state either.

However, airplanes and the meat servos steering them operate under the benevolence and beneficence of the Feds.

Andrew, great information thank you.  Mods, I really think this thread and the information in it should be pinned.

I generally fly IFR, and my family or destination hosts seem to appreciate knowing how soon I expect to arrive. I may live in a fool's paradise, but I figure any expectation of privacy I might cling to is a charming notion from a bygone era. My medical records, my flight activities, my income, my credit rating, my travels, my writing, my academic record, are so widely accessible that if I were to put it all on a billboard, it couldn't be more public. And no, I don't even let Google or Facebook track me. Sheesh... Might as well let my kids know when Grandmama will show up.

I agree, I use my airplane for business all the time and would love to have my competition watching me! Truth is, we can be tracked by so many devices today that having your flights public are far from something you should worry about.  All it would take is a joke email from a friend and a tracker can be loaded on your phone, iPad, etc. You can be tracked from anywhere that has cell service!  All of you should be more afraid of Yahoo, Google and the latest "game app" you downloaded on your cell, they know more about you than Flightaware - and sell it to anyone with $$$!

Maybe I am being naive, but being paranoid because someone can follow my flying habits borders on mental illness... who's to say that filling out the FAA form for privacy doesn't put you at the top of the list for searches?   I know I have nothing to hide...

Cars were public information until everyone had cell phones...

Look up the guy who just cut you off in traffic....dial him up...share your thoughts...

It's really a small world.

Tom, I used the web site you suggested and opted out. It partially worked but flight aware is still showing owners name and where he lives. Those scum bags must have some attitude about this process. Their site responds on a n number inquiry that the owner doesn't want flight information shown and then it shows their name and what town they live in.

Skybrd,

You may not be aware of this, but by law, the name and address of all aircraft owners is public information which is how FlightAware gets it. FlightAware is just displaying the same data as that the FAA displays (although they don't display the full street address out of respect for an owner's privacy).

In an earlier post, I gave a number of ways you can protect your personal information. Blaming FlightAware and calling them scum bags for your failure to understand the law is not productive.

This is what the FAA (and FlightAware) display for my aircraft: http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNum_Results.aspx?nNumberTxt=N9453V (I setup a Delaware C-Corp specifically to hold it and have all correspondence sent to a PO Box).
