Hi Folks,

My Garmin KLN89 just quit. No display. The mechanic says it is grounded and getting power. Anybody have experience with these things? I was hoping for a nice simple cheap repair. I've got to buy a 406 ELT this year. I'll bring it to the avionics shop in February when I get home but if the repair is over $500 I will just use the ipad until I can get a Garmin upgrade.

Hi jetdriven,

give me an email at heavycrude@hotmail.com if you can. I'm in the jungle now but will be home Feb 1st. I'm interested. With the new style ELT coming, and the windshield mod and speed brakes, buying a new GPS just isn't in the budget

Not sure if the KLN89B is a direct slide-in replacement for a KLN89. Worth checking before buying.

I think I have one. I will check at the hangar tomorrow. I can't remember if it's an 89 or 89B, it's not a color screen if that's gives you any indication.

Just had the same thing happen. Did this happen day or night/ low light? If the latter, try shining a bright light at the sensor. My display went black, but when I put a bright flashlight on the sensor, it immediately came back in back in full view. Light off- back to black.

On the same GPS- anybody got  QUICK GUIDE  / TUTORIAL  or working link for a simu for the KLN89?

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll be back in country in 10 days and will contact you folks that have gps units for sale.

As far as the owner manual goes, I have the original. The previous owner left me everything including the paint chips and the original Mooney test pilot logs for the delivery.

I can't believe that no one else has commented on this. We all have come to associate Garmin with all things GPS, but the unit in question here is actually a Bendix/King unit, not a Garmin. I know because i have one in my plane that acts as a worthy backup to my GNS 480.

Alright everyone, Jeff got it. Who had him in the pool? ;)

Tell us something how the brain works doesn't it. We all went to the model and ignored the make.

Guilty as charged Jeff!  Despite having used a really nice Lowrance  and Thales over in Africa, I do use "Garmin" and "GPS" interchangeably.

Skypilot- just curious if you tried shining the light on the sensor? (My cell phone was not enough light to do it- needed  a bright flash light.)

Similar, I automatically ignored the G and was focused on the KLN part.

Sounds like a sensor problem... Could be good news for a possible low tech, low cost fix...

It is a 90B I'm open to any offers if anyone is interested.

That would make for a nice replacement for any non-IFR gps... Or loran or ...

The KLN90B does everything but WAAS...

May need some additional bits to be IFR legal...

KLN-90B requires a different mounting tray, connectors and installation. Our local avionics shop says that its 3000-3500$ for install of any IFR GPS.

That is funny. Of course, it is a King. But I will probably be replacing it with a Garmin ;)

I did indeed try shining a flashlight on the little beasty. No dice.

So I thought before I contacted any of you nice folks south of the border about your kindly offered used units, I'd talk to Ducey Avionics in Edmonton, AB. I called up Brian on the phone and told him my troubles. He offered me an exchange unit for $600. It was up there but actually cheaper than on of the offered units by the time I did the exchange (The Canadian dollar is dropping), paid shipping and customs brokerage etc.

So I went to the shop about a week later with my old unit.  Brian put it on the test bench with me watching and tried to power it up. Nothing. He pulled out a repaired KLN 89B model, and told me $250. It would be an extra $150 to install the latest data base for the area, something my older unit lacked from the get-go. I went to pick it up and he dropped his price to $225. I guess they want to clean out the shelves of the old stuff.

I'm happy I now have a functioning GPS again (plus the ipad).

Anyways, thanks to all of you folks for your suggestions and offers. The problem is solved now.

My airplane is for sale and as your dollar goes up, the price of my plane goes down ;)

The screens are no longer available , your GPS is toast.....Buy a used one and slide it in....

They still have screens at Ducey's Avionics in Alberta. But they are $890 so nobody is buying them. I'm guessing they are old stock ;)
