GaryP1007 Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 Has anyone had to go through a medical post heart attack? Curious as to the process/timing/steps. Thanks Quote
M20F-1968 Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 I am a Mooney owner, an board certified internal medicine physician and an FAA AME. Send me a PM privately or e-mail me at (617) 877-0025 and we can discuss. I do not want to discuss medical matters in an open forum. At my age, and although I have no immediate issues, I would be interested in seeing what you have to say. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 Rats! At my age, and although I have no immediate issues, I would be interested in seeing what you have to say. Its complicated, as someone who had some medical issues, it takes your Doctor working with Oklahoma, going over details and tests, each is a special case Quote
fantom Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 As a very good friend I was trying to assist found out it's very difficult to find an AME with the time, ability, intestinal fortitude and willingness to put up with the FAA medical silliness, and a lot of it is just that. Like most FSDO's, the FAA at it's worst! Quote
N33GG Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 I do have a friend that had a massive heart attack in the last year or so, and he recently got his medical and flying privileges back. Gives me hope for when my turn comes... Quote
carusoam Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Yes. The timing is long. The class III becomes possible, but gets a special name for it, it is a special issuance. AOPA gives good guidance specific to heart attacks or myocardial infarction, stents and things like that. Check their section for pharmaceuticals that you may be taking. The FAA/mail/doctor can lose your paperwork.... Don't let that happen. Did you have a heart attack already, or just planning to avoid one? Pm is probably best to maintain privacy. I am not a doctor, but I did get the personal experience. Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
1964-M20E Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Good luck I hope you can get back to flying soon. Quote
Ron McBride Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 I was lucky, they only had to pop me open, no stints or other work. After 6 months of waiting, (NOT 1 day earlier) you will need a full work up from your personal Doctor, your cardioligist, blood work, a stress test, mine is on a treadmill, hospital records of what was done and reports, letters and copies of everything and then send to OKC and wait. A good AME will also help. When you get your new medical, it will be good for a year. it will come with a letter explaining what to do next year. It is everything except the hospital records and will explain when to do these reports, and then wait again. At least this will make you go to the DR. for check ups and tests once a year. Hope all turns out well. Ron Quote
David Mazer Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 It's a mess. I was helping a friend jump the hoops and, after 8 months, he was approved and with it came the letter that said it all had to be done again in 4 months since the data was now 8 months old. All that work for a 4 month medical. Very depressing. Quote
carusoam Posted December 13, 2013 Report Posted December 13, 2013 What's his risk going forwards? Is he expected to sail through the next visit to the AME? Or does the struggle begin again? Best regards, -a- Quote
David Mazer Posted December 13, 2013 Report Posted December 13, 2013 If you're talking about the guy I worked with, the struggle begins anew each time. Quote
KSMooniac Posted December 14, 2013 Report Posted December 14, 2013 There is a pretty active medical sub-forum on the AOPA forum as well that might be a good resource. I didn't realize John B here was an AME, so that is good to know for us in the Mooney world. Chuck Crinnian is also a Mooney-owning AME and I believe has started a new business/practice to help pilots. He is active on the MAPA List and could probably be found via google. Quote
David Mazer Posted December 14, 2013 Report Posted December 14, 2013 Assuming he was never denied, it would be time to go the LSA route for me at that point. Hopefully they will fix this mess by the time my time comes around. Nice of you to have helped your friend, David. Jim Unfortunately, he was definitely denied and even if he wasn't, he is in love with his RV-7. Not exactly in the LSA class. BTW, it was my pleasure to have been of any assistance not the other way around. Quote
