RocketAviator Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 Need INPUT...ASAP on battery replacement recommendations! The shop working on my Rocket is saying that I need 2 new batteries (in the tail section & hard to get to) the current batteries were installed in 7/2010. I never had any problems with the batteries but they are reporting that after charging they won't start the engine.... They have quoted 2 each G-35 batteries and my cost is $245.94 each with acid. (don't know if that includes labor but if it is like the other items I doubt it...). They have also asked if I would be interested in the Concord sealed batteries! What say you? Need input ASAP so I can give them an answer! Thanks in advance, Lacee Quote
jetdriven Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 Those gills are 209$ each from spruce, but they leak and go bad in two years. The Concorde RG-35 or rg-35 AXC with more capacity is what u want, sealed batteries and last 7 years. We got one last year. If your cg is near the forward limit get the AXC if its approved for the M20K Quote

Marauder Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 +3 On the Concorde series. I am in year 9 of my Concorde RG-35AXC ownership. The one before it lasted 7 years and I replaced it because I thought it was in there too long... Quote
KSMooniac Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 Concorde is the best on the market currently... Gill has been building a lot of bad batteries over the last few years according to everything I've read on various forums and lists. Quote
Schinderhannes Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 I have to replace my Gill G35 as well and like the the idea of installing a sealed battery, but it seems the Concord AXC is 5lbs heavier. Does Concord have a STC for the AXC? Quote
DonMuncy Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 Absolutely on the Concorde sealed. Quote

Does Concord have a STC for the AXC? Yes, and you'll need to update the W&B for it. The non-AXC version is only a pound or two heavier. Quote
OR75 Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 Concord sealed AXC if you don't work it often, consider using a battery minder Quote
N601RX Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 I replaced my Concord AXC when it was almost 8 years old. It would still crank the plane, but was starting to slow down a little. Quote
Skywarrior Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 One of my Gills died after only two years. Replaced it with a Concorde. Too early to say how it will do... Quote
Hank Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 I put in my current sealed Concorde in 2008. So far, so good. I had serious cranking troubles and rebuilt the carb and the SOS system last fall, so I no longer crank and crank and crank. Still a good battery. There are two available, I bought the one with higher cranking amps. Sorry, don't remember the model. It was $250+. Quote
DAVIDWH Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 After your new Concord's are installed, don't forget your new "Sky-Tec" Flyweight starter. Those blades will now be nothing but a blur on start-up. No more anxiety on hot starts with that combination. Quote
RocketAviator Posted September 9, 2013 Author Report Posted September 9, 2013 Many thanks, Two Concorde AXC on their way to the A&P shop! Quote
DrBill Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 You will not go wrong with the Concorde. I replaced mine after 5 years of service and now it is used to start my home generator. This way I can keep an eye on it with a battery minder more often than in the hangar. BILL Quote
FAST FLIGHT OPTIONS LLC Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 Does anyone have a weight and balance program they use to recalculate weigths and print for the POH??? I installed the heavier concorde over the weekend and want to update the weight and balance to reflect the 5 lbs xtra Quote
triple8s Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 I bought a G-35 and it lasted almost 4 years however it puked acid out in my battery box on a VERY regular basis and I followed the instructions to the letter on putting in the acid. No more Gills I have Concorde sealed in the O and yes they are more to replace but ya wanna buy batteries AND battery boxes? or just buy a good battery? Quote

FAST FLIGHT OPTIONS LLC Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 I know how to do the calculations but I didn't just want to scribble it on the most current weight and balance with a pen. I was looking for one of those spreadsheet type programs that someone probably already created Quote
M20F Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 I installed the heavier concorde over the weekend and want to update the weight and balance to reflect the 5 lbs xtra You need to be an A&P or better to update the W&B. Quote
