  1. I have split mode and found (yes, I’ve tried it) the jacks and PTT are easily in my reach, depends on your build I guess although I wouldn’t want to do it in turbulence/IMC. I did similar, different philosophy, I wanted to get rid of the old: No annunciator, no Klixon CB switches, no vacuum pump, no pilar mounted compass, no microphone.
  2. They are completely compatible, at least on my J. (Side camlocs only).
  3. A backup for such an occurrence is readily available, plug your headset into copilot jacks and use its transmit switch. Chances are the stuck switch is tied to the 1960s microphone circuit so it won’t work anyway.
  4. I have the older electric ones (series 100?), do they support them? And there’s some cam adjustment docs but they apply to the 2000 series.
  5. Are they leaking? Check the documentation, this should be spelled out in the continuing of airworthiness I would think.
  6. Correct. I did have to buy a variety of sizes, 4-6 and then tested each for best fit, before ordering complete set, most were 4s, but a couple were 5s.
  7. Final return leg of a trip to California, 37+ hours logged…note to self, weather can suck in December, especially in California. First trip with new panel, the GFC 500 is solid but there’s a lot of gotchas with approaches. I’m going to need to practice with it, I needed to take over a couple of times.
  8. Back then they had 2 pilots and an engineer to monitor systems as I recall.
  9. Skybolt SS wide flange, a better camloc:
  10. Mine has about 20 camlocs, no screws.
  11. And you kept the antiquated standalone microphone?
  12. Since it’s a resistance sender, a bad connection could result in bad readings, need to check the wiring, each section including the connectors and make sure connections a secure and clean.
  13. How long would silica pellets work in a humid environment (Houston, Florida for example)?
  14. I have the thicker glass and tried special hammer and stepping on it , no luck.
  15. For a second I thought the subject line was the price.
  16. What would you have done at a non towered airport? Or if there was no maintenance shop? The prop will be awfully close to the ground.
  17. I had a pinched pitot tube that caused issues with IAS, definitely need to check this.
  18. My 78J had ram air, with analog gauge you’d see a slight blip of the needle, barely noticeable. What you “lose” in extra power is countered by improved aerodynamics of the front of the cowl without the hole. It’s one less thing to worry about…I’ve never missed it. Since I don’t have it, this makes getting the LP cowl a non starter.
  19. I’ll say, if I didn’t know better I think he was falling asleep.
  20. The one you see that comes apart into 2 parts, the pipe isn’t long enough to do that, it’s only 5-6” , hence the reason I added a section of pipe.
  21. I was thinking of that too, but in the end found a spot for the whiskey compass. I noticed there’s no planes with deviation cards for fancy magnetometers?
  22. We probably have the same one, I got a short piece (1/2” x 4”?) of threaded pipe, threaded into part and use a threaded cap to keep it in place.
  23. I guess it’s official, gray panels are in style. :-) We have the exact same boxes. But note the design differences based on personal preference, this is something you don’t get if you just buy an airplane with already updated panel.
  24. In that case I would expect a competitive quote to be $80K or so, assuming you wanted dual G3X,GFC 500, audio panel. I use the old rule of thumb; total hardware cost + 50% for labor, which may not work in this inflationary era.
  25. Clearly there’s more to it than that…a 375 and 255 are only $14K?
