  1. If you get a certified EM, you can lose the factory instruments and will have plenty of room.
  2. Find yourself a sports car (corvette, Porsche, etc) and sit in it. If you don’t like the seating position, you won’t like a Mooney.
  3. I live 200 yards from ocean and get surface salt layer on my car, but the airport is about 5 miles inland and it doesn’t seem to get any in normal weather conditions. Salt attracts water so it’s heavy and will sink (dew) which is why you get the surface salt layer. Now if it was tied down during tropical storms that could be a different story. Normally airports insist that all tied down planes be either hangared or flown elsewhere.
  4. When was the last time it was treated with corrosion protection?
  5. No, they’re made for cars, so I assume size is standardized.
  6. I got these auto shades, they have suction cups but I don’t need them, just squeeze them into the window frame.
  7. Since Loran is only 2 dimensional (no altitude guidance, so no LPV approach) , GPS will always be the best choice.
  8. I’m usually hangared, but my airplane cover protects the vents when outside, otherwise I would worry about wasps, etc using them as a home.
  9. I leave the open end secured behind the GTN which has a fan but figure if needs a fan it can benefit from some cooling air. Not sure if water could make its way up the entire length but I wouldn’t want a direct connection.
  10. They are suppose to have hoses going to the back of the avionics rack(s).
  11. I have a plastic storage box, and I keep it at home, also have digital copies of the maintenance logs.
  12. If the problem is dirty contacts, will electronic cleaner sprayed into the lock get to contacts?
  13. Yes, but this was before Covid: Zephyr did the engine overhaul, and I had Palm Beach Propeller overhaul the prop. I had a cracked case that couldn’t be repaired and replaced it with new case that added around +$4k to the cost. I replaced the alternator (was oversized and not a normal Mooney alternator) with new. The starter was only year or so old, so I didn’t do anything to it. I replaced all the control cables with new. Stripped and repainted the engine mount frame. Disassembled the baffling and replaced the silicone, had a broken piece replaced with new fabricated one, replaced rusted and broken hot air intake screen with stainless steel. Painted all the sheet metal to be black. The oil cooler was replaced by PO, so didn’t do anything but flush it. Replace some of the hardware on the flaps. Problem missing something, because of the cracked case it took 4 months , was scheduled to take 2. I did some of the work and the hours AP charged was double his non written estimate. I told the AP to mount the engine higher to allow it room to sag. He didn’t do that, now my engine sits a little lower than ideal.
  14. Here’s a photo of the back of the switch, is it as easy to unscrew the 2 screws, or do you have to drill out any rivets?
  15. What is wrong with https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/igswitches.php It’s used with Cessnas with Lycomings, PMA….should only require a signature to install it on a Mooney.
  16. If redoing your panel, why not just add a light to show the fuel pump is on?
  17. I use this one, 2 pieces so it fits in baggage area, but it would slip out so I added the 4” of threaded pipe and cap to prevent it from slipping. It’s almost 4’ in length.
  18. ATC available here: https://archive.liveatc.net/krdu/KRDU-Dep-Apr-04-2024-1930Z.mp3 He could have landed in Jordan lake that was under him when he lost an engine.
  19. 6 months ago I had my 100 series (no controller, only a relay) overhauled for $2K.
  20. Which factory? Not Mooney, contact Precise Flight directly.
  21. My design criteria was to have anything I need to interact with in flight on the right side of the yoke (I fly with my left hand), so I put the light switches on the left side as I rarely use them while in flight. I put the engine monitor and transponder in the right radio stack because I rarely interact with them during flight. Everything else I use is in easy reach of my right hand. I would recommend arranging your panel similarly.
  22. For high altitudes I use rule altitude (1000s) + fuel flow (gph) = 19. So in Denver, 19-5=target fuel flow of 14gph.
