So I got a new fastner for my upper cowl, its the larger ones not the smaller ones. So how and the heck do I get the retaining clip that holds it from falling out to set into position as when the fastner is installed there is just enough room to be able to fit the clip into the groove and the main problem is I can't get it spread as there isn't any holes like a snap ring has. How do you get it spread to clear over the shaft of the fastner?

Silly question but what a PITA!

Also I've been looking at sky bolt and other fastners companies to replace the little ones on the side if the cowl with the larger ones because there all falling out as the cowl hole is wore enough where the retaining ring dosent grip well. Is it easy to drill the hole out to the larger fastner size or should one keep the little fastners and get a fiberglass kit and re-doo the holes?

Anyone tried putting any type of vibration isolation thin rubber between upper and Lowe cowl on the sides? I'm getting a bunch of the black stuff that breeds itself from vibration then after flying in rain it streaks down the side of the cowl.

Thanks guys and gals!

I have both, Mike.  The pliers tool is used to install the finish washer on the cowl fastener, the pin shaped device installs the snap ring retainer on the backside of the cowl. PM me.

You can also use a socket of the proper size and a pair of channel locks. Not as neat as the special tool, but it will work.

I just replaced all the camloc fasteners on the cowl: 5 on the top, 17 on each side panel of my E. The fastener tool from Skybolt is $24. The spring style studs are $3.19 ea.

I found that a few were difficult due to the effective thickness of the sheet metal varying and that I could do some straightening, compressing, discrete pounding and the bolt would turn. Once it was fitted, it would turn fine.

I had to use longer bolts on the top, 5 ea, the corners of the sides, 8 ea, and a couple of other spots. I wanted all phillips head so the stainless versions are SK40S5-6S and  SK40S5-3S.

I do as well.  I did all of mine recently when I finished up painting the windshield and front cowling mod.  I left all the fasteners stainless.   One other point for those looking at changing the cam locks - when I removed the old grommet a 1/4 inch socket and extension that fits through the grommet helps to "roll" the grommet out of the skin.  When I compared the new grommet to the old the new were just a wee bit deeper - so buy em as a set!!
