Mlasalle Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I live in south Louisiana where it's pretty warm. Been paying more attention to CHT on climb trying to keep it below 380. The POH rec climb at 125 knots is too slow to keep it down. Even 135 -145 seems to creep up the temps over 390. This is the number 5 head that's right behind the alternator. Today the surface temp was 78 degrees and at 5000" oat was 65. Fuel flow is 26-27 gph. WOT at 2650. Any ideas? Fuel flow to low. RPM settings? BTY she's an Ovation 3 Quote
Mlasalle Posted April 22, 2013 Author Report Posted April 22, 2013 Haven't taken cowling off since last oil change 20 hrs ago. They were fine then. I'm not having any significant change in CHTs, just paying more attention to them. The #5 head stays 20 degrees hotter on climb then comes down when level. The others say well below 380. But that makes sense, there is a baffle at the inlet I can see. I'll check it out tomorrow. Thanks Quote
Marauder Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 This is bird nesting season as well for some of us. Might be worthwhile take a look under the cowling. If you didn't have a problem beforehand, maybe it is something simple. Quote
carusoam Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 How many hours on the engine? Best regards, -a- Quote
Mlasalle Posted April 22, 2013 Author Report Posted April 22, 2013 Also, RPM max out at 2650. Should she get the whole 2700 pr is that normal? Quote
Marauder Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Also, RPM max out at 2650. Should she get the whole 2700 pr is that normal? I would have the accuracy of the tach checked before jumping on the prop governor. Mine maxes at 2690 using the digital tach. Quote
29-0363 Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I've posted the MFD engine page of 29-0363 in cruise at 8,000 ft. Â Note #5 CHT is higher than the others - always has been, as well as having the lowest EGT. Â On leaning #4 will always peak first, then almost simultaneously #2 will peak. Â Leaning was around 100F ROP, hence the high FF. Quote

PMcClure Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 My Ovation 2 is getting the same results. #5 is always the hottest and reaches 390-410 on climb out. I checked the baffles and everything looks good. Others are around 350-360. Quote
jetdriven Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I think the "pixie hole mod" helps the #5 CHT on some Ovations. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/3680-high-cht-on-5/?hl=pixie#entry45073 Quote

Parker_Woodruff Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Is the full rich / Wide Open Throttle fuel flow of 26-27 gallons per hour at the airport elevation, or up at 5000'? Quote
Mlasalle Posted April 23, 2013 Author Report Posted April 23, 2013 Yup. Pouring all the coals on it. Airport elevation is 8'. Feet that is. What's a pixie hole? Quote
jetdriven Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Its a hole that sometimes develops without explanation or logbook entry. It just appears like pixie dust. Quote
Mlasalle Posted April 23, 2013 Author Report Posted April 23, 2013 Gotcha. I just read other posts on those holes. My #5 is running in 390s only on climb. Once level it gets down below 360. I was just a bit concerned for damage on the climbs, but if that is normal, I can live with that. But, I'm low time enough to not have gone through a rebuild on a big engine like the 550. Quote

Mlasalle Posted April 24, 2013 Author Report Posted April 24, 2013 Any simple recs on LOP settings, say at 5000',6000', and 10,000/11,000'? Quote
