mooniac58 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 I am very pleased and proud to declare I have alas taken and passed my IFR checkride! What a journey! The good news for all of you folks is that it puts me one major step closer to being able to work on this website again. My wife and I are expecting our first child here in about 2-3 weeks, so that is of course the next major focus in my life. Once that stabilizes I should be clear to invest 5-10 hours on this site each week again. Thanks to all for your patience and support of Mooneyspace.com! Craig Quote
Buster1 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Congrats, a big milestone indeed! My advice (given to me nearing the birth of our first child)...on the way to the hospital...safely run a red light! If the wife is in labor, you've got a free chance to do it! You'll get a free police escort if they pull you over! We did it on the way to the hospital when my wife went into labor, but it was 10:30 at night and no one was around for miles, but it was still fun! Good luck! Quote
Kwixdraw Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Don't bet on that red light advice. Now days the cop might just follow you to the hospital to issue you a ticket for the violation. Time changes everything. Quote
lahso Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Great news on the instrument rating! Congratulations, and many thanks for your efforts on the site. Quote
docket Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 I missed the birth of my kiddo because I didn't have my instrument rating and I was socked in with fog. Enjoy the rating -- nothing is more satisfying that a clean approach in IMC and having the runway magically appear in front of you. Quote
LFOD Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Congratulations and thanks for all your work on the forum. Quote
231Pilot Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Congratulations! Now that you have it, do more than stay current, if you don't have much IMC there, get a safety pilot and keep flying approaches, holds, and intercept and track nav courses as often as you can. Just barely being current (the minimum allowed) can be dangerous. Also, congratulations on the upcoming new arrivals! Thanks for this forum, it is a terrific site. Lew Quote
FlyingAggie Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Craig, Congratulation on both the IR and the future arrival! Between the expected arrival, relocating to NM, keeping the new IR current and working on MS, your boat looks to be fully loaded. Thanks for all the work on MS. I really enjoyed meeting you and seeing your plane while I was in Kona and look forward to having you as a "neighbor" later this year. Alan Quote
mooniac58 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Report Posted January 10, 2010 Quote: JimR Congratulations on the new ticket, Craig. Do you ever get any real IMC in Hawaii or are you going to have to wait until you move back stateside to actually use it? Get as much sleep as you can over the next few weeks. You'll need it once the baby comes! Wonderful news on both fronts. Jim Thanks all! We do get some IMC in Hawaii, especially in the winter season (now). Just yesterday Lanai was IFR with 750 foot ceilings. I have seen Maui IFR a handfull of times and Hilo (which I rarely travel too) is always fighting low ceilings. I mainly wanted to get the rating to a) make me a better skilled, more aware pilot easily climb up and down through cloud layers - many times I would climb to cruise and get stuck on top of a 3000 foot thick deck with no holes to get back down, only left with flying 50 miles away to find a way back under it. I flew into Kona on Friday and the vog (volcano haze) was so bad that from the DME 10 arc I could not see the field so ARTCC (with a sigh) issued me the VOR 35 approach. I then had to listed to some grumpy Alaska pilot who was not pleased about having to follow me in. I guess most people here just lie and say they have the field in site because they know from the ATIS that they will see it around 5-7 miles out. Oh well, for now I will stick to the rules - no contact on field, no visual approach. Quote
KSMooniac Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Congrats on both fronts, Craig! Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 Gary (N212WD) and I were talking about flying in Hawaii and how the instrument rating is a must for flying over a moonless, horizonless night over the water in VMC. Quote
N207LS Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 Congrats. Now that you have the ticket, I suggest that you use it as much as the sunny Hawaiian islands allow. The more that you use it, the better you are at it. Now that it is all fresh, focus on staying not just current, but truly proficient. Best of luck! Aaron Quote
