(Rubber Gear Pucks) Offer to Buy in Bulk

PLEASE READ the following message threads from Randy Herber of Herber Aircraft and my self. 

The very last message .. bottom of this post .. explains Herber's offer to purchase Mooney gear pucks.

During Air Venture 2012 last week I discussed with the Lord Rep the future availability of the landing gear pucks and the potential of new chemistry  appearing in the near future, that would improve the current pucks.

•  No change in future product.  ( low volume will not support re-certification expenditures)
  
•  Lord did comment small run(s) in mfg will most likely create an increased cost in near future. 
  

I asked Lord Rep to request Lord distributors prepare a best price scenario for orders of pucks. The only distributor responding was Herber Aircraft in California.

 

I am not certain if the long body (heavier) Mooney's use the same pucks, or better stated is their only ONE part # for Main and Nose pucks for all Mooney aircraft using the eleven puck set-up???

I would like your input on best way to present this offer to MAPA,  any MSC and Mooney owners in general. 

I /  we do not want to alienate anyone with an established channel to purchase pucks, but I certainly got the feeling it is such a low order profit center for Lord that a 20% SALE price provides some incentive for owners, MSC's and any one hedging on petroleum based products ...  a chance to secure a set or inventory of pucks. $85.00/puck is not an enormous saving ... but a 20 airplane order  MAY ensure Lord  keeps the part # , the product part alive. Offer good untill Nov. 1st 2012

If you can get enough to order for 10 aircraft (at 11 per aircraft, that is 110 mounts total).  We are willing to give 10% off to bring the price to $95.63 each.

Yes, I need pucks and will be buying eleven. I do not have some non-transparent interest with this distributor..or simply stated my purpose in this post is to (a) keep the pucks available ( at best cost to all.. not USE my friends to get a "deal".

here's a stupid question.  Do these pucks have a shelf life?

Rob, No such thing as a bad question..I am a chemist by training. Perhaps a simple call to Lord is in order. The pucks are made by Lord and are dated when mfg'ed. Under no compression and stored out of light, heat and anything one can determine is unhealthy for rubber... I will make a wild guess they would be minimally compromised in storage for 5-7 years.  Perhaps someone seeing my comment will have a better more scientific answer. Lord engine mounts see extremes and hold up well for 5-7 years.

PS: I have heard that some owners of heavy Mooneys jack the planes when hangared with full fuel. Full fuel when stored will give your tanks a longer life.

I'd be interested as well, pending a good answer on the storage life questions.  I could certainly keep them sealed (perhaps vacuum sealed) in my basement for some years until needed, but I want a near-guarantee before spending 1 AMU just to put some spares in my inventory.

I am thinking of being part of the order for proper parts for my Ovation 1.

 

Rules on storing rubber...

  (1) avoid UV.

  (2) avoid O2.

  (3) avoid compression.

The proper heat sealed bag for meat packaging could work well. A foil layer could improve the packaging's barrier properties as well.

The Mooney/ Lord pucks are relatively oxygen and UV resistant based on my decade of ownership.  Constant compression, on the other hand seems to be detrimental to the resilience of the rubber itself.

The nose gear donuts on my plane were last changed by MAC in the '60s. Still in spec and only tiny little surface cracks. I plan to replace them next year, but yeah, they can last a long time. I would be interested in 3, but not a whole set. My mains are recent enough.

I pretty much have a fully-new set as well, but if they could last 7 years on the shelf, and then another 7 years once installed, it could be worth the investment. If nothing else, they could be included in the sale of the plane if I ever decide to go to a non-Mooney (perish the thought!).

I once had a big Mooney owner tell me how lucky I was, that my donuts would last on my small Mooney about 7 to 10 years. He said his had to be replaced about every two to three years.

 I told him If his landings improved he might get 6 or 7 years out of his .

Get on this one, guys.. the prices have only been going in one direction. I would be in on this if I had not sprung for new pucks on my mains @ annual and now have the last 3 for my NLG in a box ready to install soon.

I don't get all the hoopla. All doughnuts were replaced on my '83 J in April during the annual. The last replacement was in October, 2001. The price per unit this time around was $90 and if they last another decade I don't see how saving $5 per unit is much of a big deal.

 

Or am I missing something?
